Some racing cars use aluminum or composite/carbon fiber honeycomb to form an attenuator that dissipates crash energy using a much smaller volume and lower weight than road car crumple zones. Crumple zones work by managing crash energy, absorbing it within the outer parts of the vehicle, rather than being directly transmitted to the occupants, while also preventing intrusion into or deformation of the passenger cabin. This better protects car occupants against injury. This is achieved by controlled weakening of sacrificial outer parts of the car, while strengthening and increasing the rigidity of the inner part of the body of the car, making the passenger cabin into a 'safety cell ', by using more reinforcing beams and higher strength…

I hypothesized that the helmet that would have the best results would be Ashley’s helmet. From judging the materials that she had used, I had estimated that her helmet would provide optimal protection for the egg. Her helmet was made of a very hard material for the main frame – which I thought would reduce any force. In addition, her helmet had a clear plastic covering for the front of the egg, which I thought would withstand all outside forces. The only vulnerability seemed to be the underside of the egg – which was clear on all of the egg helmets; however, her egg helmet was very heavy, thus giving me the impression that gravity would always pull the hard shell towards the ground. After testing, it was apparent that her helmet could withstand drops from tall heights; unfortunately, her egg helmet fell very short of having the best result. My hypothesis was accurate because her design provided an overall good protection for the egg.…

“Helmets have a natural limitation,” said study contributor, Dr. Julian Bailes, former NFL and NCAA team physician and new chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at NorthShore University Health System in Evanston, Ill. “With some major collisions, the helmet—the head—stops moving. Helmets work well for preventing scalp laceration, skull fracture and bleeding in the brain, but they don’t always prevent rotation and tearing of brain fibers,” he said. Helmets do not offer full protection from concussions but there has been no alternative up until now. A group of researchers have developed a potential solution to this concussion problem that doesn't involve helmets but external protection that internally affects the players. A simple collar has been created that compresses the vessels in the neck to increase blood volume and reduce internal movement of the brain. The concept of this product was to reduce slosh. Slosh is the term researchers use to describe the movement and tearing of the brain that occurs when a player suffers a concussion. An 83 percent reduction in the amount of brain fibers torn was shown when testing the collars on rats. The collars have yet to hit the big stage and be studied on people but the wearability of these collars are being tested by our military. Bailes has also stated that these finding are preliminary and further…

The purpose of a helmet is in an uncontrolled environment it acts as safety gear that can minimize and prevent injury to the head. People wear helmets to “protect [themselves] from head injuries that can kill you” (Consumer Report, 2016), such as bleeding inside the skull or brain and skull fractures; with the decision to wear a helmet separating the difference of injury and disaster (Consumer Report, 2016). Helmets can also be purposeful in preventing traumatic brain injury (TBI), and when American nationwide records were analyzed of over 6,200 people by researchers at the University of Arizona in Tucson who as a result of an accident had a TBI, they concluded that wearing a helmet reduces the risk of severe injury by 58 percent (Consumer Report, 2016). Some people who use helmets for the purpose of preventing concussions…

UCLA and Architected Materials has a team of researchers who have made an advance in technology to reduce the number of head and severity of injuries to football players.(Kisliuk) The team developed a light and breathable material called Architected Lattice. Architected Lattice can help develop and transmit data from an impact of collision This material was made to improve that performance of football helmets. The team of researchers won the Head Health Challenge II that is a part of a $60 million Head Health initiative sponsored by the NFL, General Electric and Under Armour. There is a $500,000 grant for research, testing, and development of technology for the first year that comes with the award. There is also a possibility of getting a 1 million dollar grant in the second year. Larry Carlson director of advanced materials at the Institute for Technology Advancement at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science said, “We believe that in addition to preventing or reducing injuries from high-impact collisions on the football field, this material can be used in a variety of sports and recreational applications.” (Kisliuk)…
