Valentine Descriptive Writing
Valentine held tried to hold the wheel steadily, despite his shaking hands. They dripped with sweat beneath his sticky leather gloves. He used to never mind the warmth and humidity of the steam as it wafted past his nose, but today it choked him, as if he was trying to breath fresh air but only the dreaded heat of many engines filled his lungs. The sky seemed filled with such a wet haze, perhaps created by the many airships that filled the sky. Valentine has never seen so many ships in one place, except perhaps in old photographs, and he thought so many will never be gathered together again. This was the end, the end of airships, the end of lifting gas, and he was certain he was going to die.

Valentine glanced over his shoulder and caught a glimpse of the captain with two lit cigarettes in her mouth. Perhaps their smoke was mixing with the steam in the air, giving him the feeling of being choked with every breath he took.

The two fleets of airships faced each other in the skies like two swarms of angry hornets. The Federal fleet shiny and new, with large American flags wafting from their sterns. The rogue fleet fearsome in its hodgepodge appearance, and array of various flags, some known, some Valentine has never seen before.

Slowly a kite carrying a flag raised from the top of that lone ship. On the flat was painted a crude depiction of an eagle. It raised higher and higher as Valentine released more and more string. It was the same caricature of an eagle that his father drew in at the end of every letter. It was the same eagle on the Barnet family crest. If his father was commanding the Rogue fleet, perhaps his father would hold his fire, perhaps the Rogue fleet would not fire on the Feds, just perhaps there might be a

God Bless America and Ant Farm are similar for an obvious reason…they both are about flags. However, they both have totally different meanings. Ringgold's work is about civil rights and racism while Yanagi's work is about cultural globalization and nationalism. (Sayre, p.21) In a way, they are similar in that they both deal with political and social issues that African Americans and Japanese citizens face everyday. Racism is not only a black/white problem it includes people of ALL races whether it be black, white, Hispanic, Japanese, Chinese, Korean or even Jewish. Racism doesn't just cover the color of your skin, it covers everything about an individual's way of life including their religion and the style of clothes he or she may wear. Ringgold's God Bless America is an expression of the emotional and physical torment of black Americans prior to and during the Civil Rights Movement. This piece of art movement had a lot of cultural ties to the population during the 1960's that also can be applied today. Yanagi is trying to show how cultural influences are changing his country's way of living which is also an issue in today's world. The cultural diversity throughout the world is changing the way everyone lives. In What is the Proper Way to Display the American Flag?, Tyler is expressing to the viewers that they have rights given to them by the United States constitution. Tyler's work and…

The stylistic elements used in the third paragraph clearly depicts Douglas' emotions toward freedom. This is peppered with metaphors such as "the glad ship is gone she hides in the dim distance" signifying freedom, in which Douglas seems to focus on the most. Imagery and comparison can also be seen in "you are freedom's swift-winged angels, that fly round…

‘Flag’ considers the value of patriotism as symbolized by the flag, and explores ideas of national identity, with a running metaphor comparing to a flag. It considers how the flag is used and exploited, this creates sympathy, and the refrain explains subtly that the flag is ‘just a piece of cloth’. In each of the first four stanzas a question and answer is given which both asserts and challenges the power and value of the flag telling the reader, it can control countries; it can motivate men; it can change the minds of cowards; it can live forever. This shows a high level of power and in a way shows hidden personification as its capabilities (excluding the final point) are of some intelligence that would only seem human. In the final stanza the person asks how he can possess such a powerful item, and the answer to the earlier questions is revealed, with having possession of the flag can have terrible consequences. He addresses the reader directly: ‘the blood you bleed’. He follows this in the final stanza, by revealing what the ‘piece of cloth’ is, but also revealing the consequences of taking the flag, losing your independence, the freedom to make your own decisions and, it is implied, your morality. This only makes the reader more curious.…

In the poem Flag, by John Agard, it seems to have been written around Agard and his son having a conversation as the child always asks a question at the start of each stanza, and Agard answers to the questions saying “It’s just a piece of cloth” By calling a flag “a piece of cloth” gives us the interpretation that Agard is getting annoyed at his child always asking questions about a flag. This would make the reader question the amount of power and symbolism a flag has.…

Quickdraw is a poem about the end and break down of a relationship. Specifically an argument between the speaker and their other half and the feelings felt by the speaker in the poem. It has many similarities and differences with In Paris with You a poem about a very negative relationship with the speaker who is desperately in love with someone who is just using them. The poem uses a play on words and anytime the words Paris and love are mentioned you have to switch them, so Paris means love and love means Paris. These poems have similarities and difference and these can be explored through language techniques and key themes.…

The poem “Old Ironsides” by Oliver Wendell Holmes was written to remember the US Naval ship the USS Constitution, nicknamed “Old Ironsides.” It also had another purpose of saving and preserving the battleship.
