First degree murder is defined by federal and state laws as a killing which is deliberate and premeditated. Many states define it as a killing committed in connection with felonies such as rape, burglary, arson or involving multiple deaths, the killing of certain types of people ( such as a child or police officer), or certain weapons particularly a gun[1]. First and second degree murder are distinguishable by the fact that second degree murder usually does not require premeditation. Under federal law each of the following elements must be met:…

Wyoming is not "a place where you kill your neighbor," and they see each other as neighbors (317). The overall assumption of the citizens of Wyoming is that these kinds of things do not happen in small towns. Especially in Laramie, in which there is hardly a murder a year (316). "We really take care of each other here," said a woman (339). The people of Laramie seem completely dumbstruck by the incident.…

On August 20 1990, the university town of Gainesville, Florida was ranked as being the thirteenth best place to live in the United States by Money magazine. By the end of the week, American papers had renamed the town "Grisly Gainesville" after the bodies of five young students had been discovered brutally murdered and mutilated as they slept in their dorms. One weekend by one man transformed the excitement of the beginning school yeah into terror as hundreds of students fled, not knowing if and when he would strike again. A week later the media reported that the police had their number one suspect in custody, which created countless issues and ordeals for Edward Humphrey and his family. His case was simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Emotionally disturbed with a long history of strange behavior and violent emotional outbursts, he had seemed to police and the many witnesses to his antics, to be a prime suspect. With no evidence to hold him, the authorities somehow succeeded in stretching the limits of the law and had him locked away while they built their case around him. Before they could, the real killer was found. Danny Harold Rolling had moved on after his murders in Gainesville and was eventually arrested for armed robbery in Ocala, Florida. It would be some time before he would be linked to the homicides, and it would be longer still before Edward Humphrey's name would be cleared. Danny Rolling's story is a perfect example of how a childhood and background information about a person make the probability of becoming a serial killer so high. It would be impossible to know how horrible Rolling's childhood was and not feel compassion for the child who has been abused, beaten and bullied by an over-bearing and disturbed father. It would be impossible not to feel anger toward his mother who time…

“In ten years after Columbine, more than eighty shootings took place in the United States.” (Cullen 348) The Principal of Columbine High School, Mr. D, made himself available to every principal who made it through the shootings to talk. Although these calls were hard sometimes, nothing compared to an email he got from a student that was obsessed with Columbine from North Carolina. The email said, “In a few hours you will probably hear about a school shooting in North Carolina. I am responsible for it. I remember Columbine. It is time the world remembered it. I am sorry. Goodbye.” (Columbine 348) When Mr. D realized he got this email, it was too late. The student drove by his school while firing off eight shots, injured two people and killed his father. School shooting was a fear that was now expanded all throughout the world. Another school shooting that was a real eye opener was at Virginia Tech by Seung-Hui Cho. “Seung-Hui Cho killed thirty-two people, plus himself, and injured seventeen.” (Cullen 348) Cho didn’t seem to relish his massacre like Eric and Dylan did, he had psychosis and didn’t even seem…

    Kristin’s Death

This case is based on the death of Kristin whose author is her father. Michael Carter was Kristin’s ex-boyfriend, his past criminal record demonstrates how easy it is for criminals to get away with murder. I’m going to go over some of his past criminal record to demonstrate how Michael Cartier should have never been set free in the streets, and to demonstrate how many opportunities our justice system had to put him away in jail before he committed more crimes. I believe that the best way to present Michael’s criminal history is by covering some of the many encounters he had with our justice system prior to murdering Kristin as well as the consequences for his actions. The first arrest was 1998 for burglary, when arrested Michael was sentenced to six month in jail. However, he never served any time for this crime. Followed by a sledgehammer rampage in 1990. Another incident where our justice system failed to put Michael in jail was on March 28, 199I when another of Michael’s violent abuse victim called his probation officer. The probation officer “told Rose to get a restraining order” (Stillman, 2010). Rose Ryan sister mentioned to the probation officer that Michael had a gun in his possession, this led the probation officer to obtain a warrant for Michael Cartier’s arrest. This didn’t stop Michael from attacking rose with a pair of scissors. When Michael was finally picked up by…
