Utilitarianism argues that, given a set of choices, the act we should choose is that which produces the best results for the greatest number affected by that choice. Jeremy Bentham’s, an English utilitarian, went off by saying that actions should be pursued if they promote the greatest amount of happiness. Thus, happiness is identified with pleasure and the absence of pain. Marijuana has been an uprising issue in today’s generation causing a growing debate on whether or not it should be legalized nationwide. Colorado is one of the few states that have already legalized marijuana not only for medical purposes, but recreational as well. Since this legalization, Colorado has had a boost in the economy. In only one month, they sold thirty-four million dollars in marijuana. From that, 3.4 million dollars was donated to school and the crime rate went down by fifteen percent. Analysts now are now claiming that taxing marijuana could potentially raise extras of millions of dollars yearly. This is benefiting the city in more ways than they had expected. With all the extra money, they are also able to fund projects, such as repairing roads and constructing new parks. Police officers also have more time and were able to get money donated to them to go after criminals’ committing other, more violent crimes. The legalization of marijuana in Colorado has brought in so many opportunities within such short time. Considering this, if marijuana was legalized everywhere, the opportunities and benefits would be endless. The outcome of universally legalizing marijuana would have a greater potential to make many lives better and strengthen many economies. The pros outweigh the cons overall.
