Use Of Devices In Marilyn Hilton's Full Cicada Moon
In her novel, Full Cicada Moon, Marilyn Hilton uses repetition to show that Mimi or someone else cares about what is repeating. Authors can use repetition to show a theme, certain topic, object, or idea that is important to the story. If a word or phrase is repeated, you hear it multiple times, resulting in the idea sticking in your head.
After Mimi’s first home ec class, Hilton repeats the phrase, “I have a notion”. “I have a notion that Mama and I will go downtown this Saturday. I have a notion that she’ll buy one fabric with flowers for the bottom part and another fabric with stripes for the tie and pocket… And I have a notion that if I sew this apron very fast, I’ll have time to make a skirt” Mimi repeats, “I have a notion” three times

Repetition is the recurrence of certain phrases or schemes within a work of literature, it enhances the understanding its readers. In the novel, Things Fall Apart, the idea of conflict is undeniable, this helps to build up certain images which strengthens the overall message as the story proceeds. According to Scheub, “Rhythm—the artistic repetition and manipulation of images and image sets—is the instrument whereby the message is remembered and communicated” (1998, p. 94). By saying this, readers are constantly reminded of the main idea presented throughout the work. The repetition of certain visuals and themes allows readers to make connections and the focal point remains intact.…

Memory, symbol, and pattern affect the reading of literature by making it easier for readers to understand what’s going on in a literary work. While reading, readers begin to notice the trend or pattern in the devices that they recognize such as themes or symbols. When reading literature, readers tend to recall certain events or small parts from other parts of literature from what they’re reading currently. The recognition of patterns make it easier to read complicated literature by completely comprehending the intended message that withholds in the literary work. A time when my appreciation of a literary work was enhanced by understanding symbol and or pattern was when reading The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.…

I just cannot believe how my English used to look! I am now a sophomore in high school taking advanced classes after a long talk with my counselor who had placed me in regular English classes. She assumed I couldn’t handle the type of work given to the “advanced” students, because all she heard when I spoke was my accent, and because based on her prejudice, that I wasn’t an “advanced” student. Although, my English is still not advanced and needs improvements, I have managed to overcome much of my struggles since I recently moved here. The English language has been an issue when I want to fluently communicate my thoughts, I know most of the topics the teachers address, the problem is when I have to write or speak in “formal” English, as I am always required to do…

In common literature, motifs are reoccurring symbols that develop a certain aspect of the author’s intention. In The Awakening, Kate Chopin uses the motif of water to develop the theme of freedom. Similar to the Chopin, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the motif of yellow and white to develop the theme of appearance versus reality. In contrast, their themes may be different, however the intention of both authors successfully uses the motifs to develop the theme.…

These poetic devices are seen in a large amount of her poems, including her poem “I know why the caged bird sings.” For example, she uses, “The caged bird sings with a fearful trill of things unknown but longed for still and his tune is heard on the distant hill for the caged bird sings of freedom,” as a refrain, which appears throughout the poem. There is another sentence that appears at the end of the stanza before the previous refrain: “His wings are clipped and his feet are tied so he opens his throat to sing.” Both of these quotes are repeated twice in the poem, giving them emphasis. These lines are repeated to emphasize why the “caged bird” sings, which is in the title of the poem. The caged bird is also a metaphor for people, specifically African Americans and slavery, and it talks about how a slave wants to be free but can’t do anything else, so he sings about…

There are also other lines that repeat multiple times using the literary device of a couplet, which is a line using a rhyming scheme. The line is “Stone hard, machine gun/ Firing at the ones who run”.There has been many different test to show that rhyming is a way to help the brain remember so they used the rhyming scheme to get the point acrossQQ. It also adds an element and depth to a story of of things firing at to you and without that line there would be no depth. Another line is the most popular and well known saying “I am titanium” . This line has many different literary devices in but the most noticeable one is a refrain which is somewhat like repetition. The phrase of three words is used in almost every stanza to get the point across. Titanium is the title of the song so it is understandable why it appears multiple times. The fourth example is “Shoot me down, but I don't fall” which is a hyperbole. The reason it…
