Understanding Persons with Intellectual Disabilities

ABSTRACT
Students and adults can be affected by many disabilities. Some maybe genetics, some self inflicted by accidents, in order to help the person with the disability we must first understand the reason behind the problem to better help the person affected by the disability. All disabilities affect individual in different wants, from learning disabilities to blindness each person and their families are affected in different ways. Many of these disabilities will affect each student in different ways, some may learn slower than others, and require more time to finish an assignment or even more time to comprehend what the teacher is trying to rely. As a student, these individual will require assistant From IDEA in order to proceed to enter grade school all the way through high school to be able to transition to a the world and lead a normal and productive life. And with the proper guidance and family support, they will be normal productive citizens.

INTELLECTUAL DISABILITIES – MENTAL RETARDATION
Intellectual disability is a disability characterized by significant limitations both in intellectual functioning and in adaptive behavior, which covers many everyday social and practical skills (American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD), 2012). Intellectual disabilities use to be referred to as mental retardation. Mental retardation is an intellectual disability caused by a birth defect which may cause the individual to lifelong complications. Some mental retardation affects the brain, spinal cord and nervous system, e.g., Down syndrome and Fragile X Syndrome. Mental retardation may also cause learning and behavioral disorders such as Autism. It can also affect sensory related disabilities that affect vision, hearing, or metabolic disorders which controls how your body relays information needed to function. Most of these happen before birth, while a baby is being born or soon after birth. Other causes of intellectual disabilities will not take place until the child is older. Often times there are no cures for these disabilities, but they can treat symptoms. Most doctors will treat them for ADHD which will control their impulses at school. There are many causes of intellectual disability, for example if a baby doesn’t fully develop in the mother’s womb it may cause intellectual disability. A woman that drinks alcohol or gets an infection like rubella during pregnancy runs the risk of having a baby with intellectual disability. It may also be cause by the baby not getting enough oxygen at birth. The severer the case of the disability the more signs will be noticed. TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY

IDEA states that “traumatic brain injury as an acquired injury to the brain caused by an external physical force, resulting in total or partial functional disability or psychosocial impairment, or both, that adversely affects a child’s educational performance. Traumatic brain injury applies to open or closed head injuries resulting in impairments in one or more areas, such as cognition; language; memory; attention; reasoning; abstract thinking; judgment; problem-solving; sensory, perceptual, and motor abilities; psychosocial behavior; physical functions; information processing; and speech. Traumatic brain injury does not apply to brain injuries that are congenital or degenerative, or to brain injuries induced by birth trauma”. One of the most complex brain injuries is Traumatic Brain Injury. Most of the damage is done by intracranial pressure, there is a mild loss of consciousness or disorientation that will take place within less than 30 minutes to the brain and is considered mild. Any memory or consciousness loss for 30 minutes or more makes a brain injury severe. It may leave an individual in an unresponsive state; any brain injury can affect how the...
