The Holland Marsh is a crucial part of Ontario’s agriculture economy as it brings in over $1 billion of revenue each year. Various types of crops are grown each year, including onions, carrots, cabbage, potatoes and peas. However, majority of the farms are allocated specifically for onions and carrots as they are the most popular crops and bring in the most revenue. Prior to 1954, the Holland Marsh went through various stages of change. Before the 1900’s, the Marsh was a source of food for aboriginals and european settlers who would also fish and hunt. In the early 1900’s, talks about draining the Holland Marsh for agriculture use began to arise. Eventually construction began in 1925 and a canal system was created to divert the Holland River.…
The year is 1890 in Bishee, Arizona. The air is dry and the wooden sign reading "Orient Saloon" is splintered and cracked. Stock promoters, road agents and con-men sit at a tension filled table, liable to erupt into a sudden shoot-out. Tony, the proprietor, keeping a close watchful eye on the singer, Nifty' Doyle, as Murphy, the dealer, puts down the losing card; a Queen of Spades. Mining stocks and life savings go to the lucky dealer in the black fedora. "A fine game!" said the players," (Pushkin 182). Again, never losing a beat, the dealer collects bets.…
The following year, in 1860, Henry enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Private Henry Wood’s enlistment papers showed him as a laborer. He was first assigned to the Marine detachment aboard the USS Powhatan. The USS Powhatan was the same steam-driven side paddle wheeler frigate that Commodore Perry used to open Japan to world trade in the 1850’s.…
Up early, the surface of the water was like glass, I unloaded the fly rod and headed back to the water with the dogs. Knowing that the prolific Utah Chub was a major food source in the reservoir, I tied a bunch of white and gold streamers in the weeks leading up to departure. I tied one on and made a couple casts, still targeting stumps and their roots. Just as the fly neared shore, a cutthroat shot out from under the stump and grabbed my fly. Unfortunately, it was a short lived flight as the fish shook its head and gained its freedom.…

idea, warms and cools a great deal more viably than a comparably estimated home. For instance, our 600 square-foot yurt can be warmed amid less 25 temperatures with a little brilliant propane radiator (4-6,000 BTUs), and a 20 pound tank will last almost a week. A 600 square foot house would require triple that measure of fuel and still have cool and hot zones.…

My love affair with Mount Holyoke began quite innocuously, as many loves do. Exactly two years ago I received some mailings from the college—I originally began liking the school because of my intended major. However, in the last two years, I have found all the more reasons to deepen my adoration of Mount Holyoke College. The liberty of a liberal arts education will not only allow me to focus on my intended major but will also allow me to broaden my horizons to discover new areas of interest. My academic career at Mount Holyoke will be a drastic change from my high school career. Studying at Mount Holyoke College would be similar to discovering new land. I would arrive with purpose: the study of language will be my Plymouth Rock, my joy, but…
