Joan Didion, a concerned citizen living in the nicer parts of Los Angeles near the ocean, writes the “Los Angeles Notebook” about the return of the Santa Ana winds and how the winds are altering the ordinary behaviors of the Los Angeles citizens. Didion claims the Santa Ana winds aren’t just in Santa Ana, but also in Switzerland, and are very perilous with a strong disruption in normal human nature, suggesting a mechanistic behavior. One of the most memorable moments I have experienced was four years ago, when I traveled from Matamoros, Tamaulipas to San Antonio, Texas. I had the opportunity of visiting San Antonio for the first time, and more importantly, of spending time with my family who I had not seen in years prior to the trip. Spending time with my family is of great value and importance to me, so I became utterly excited to see them as soon as I had the chance.…

April 7th, 1999 is when I was born on Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota. I only lived there for two weeks after I was born. While we were in South Dakota my parents had bought my cat Sadie. She is actually still alive to this day! My mom had told me that the night I was born the doctor had an emergency Cholecystectomy and came to check on us the next day wearing a gown and pushing his own IV poll. After living in South Dakota for a couple of weeks, we then moved to Indiana. We only lived there for a year and then moved to Missouri. I do not remember anything about living at those two places because I was only about a year and a half old. We only stayed in Missouri for a month then we moved to Illinois where my parents family lived, and also because my grandma was diagnosed with breast…

The California gold rush is undoubtedly one of the major events that shaped the western United States. In a period of civil division and unrest, the gold rush brought about a renewed drive for expansion and entrepreneurship in the U.S. While often criticized for staunch immigrant racism, economic corruption, and environmental devastation, this era ushered forth a new chapter in American history and forever set the foundation for the California enterprising spirit.…

Scorching hot sun, hours of hard labor, and less than minimum wage are the working conditions of most illegal immigrants in the state of California. While illegal immigration is beneficial to the employer who seeks cheap labor, it is taking a big toll on California tax payers, due to the fact that illegal immigration is costing California approximately 10.5 billion tax dollars (Sifuentes). Even though most of the illegal immigrants obtraining jobs are simply seeking a better life for themselves, they are also undocumented, meaning they do not pay taxes to the state. In turn, these illegal immigrants are costing the state more money than they are putting into the economy system.…

Gold was first discovered on January 24, 1848, by James Marshall at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma, California. Once gold was discovered and the economy of California began to really take off, it did not take long for the government officials to recognize the advantage of allowing California to join the union. As a result, in 1850 California was accepted as a free state. Young men with a pick and wash pan in hand left their wives and children to move to California. Men used dams and flumes to expose stream and river beds for mining. People from around the world came to California to get rich and return home to live on their wealth.…

On a very cold winter of 2003, my parents and four children moved to California USA. Things drastically changed I found new friends left a lot of friends in Pakistan. In the being, I felt very sad about being alone here in America. But after two years I felt very comfortable in here. The new culture I was introduced to was very interesting for me. The place I went to had many Muslims in the same school already. It was a great transition for me. To get really comfortable in my skin and carry on with life. From the beginning, I was a quiet child and shy, I usually ended up in the back of the room to observe what is happening.…

I am sure it happened as easily as this: We were sitting around the garage shooting the bull during a cold winter snap. Thoughts turned to motorcycle rides and things spring and summer. For once, it wasn’t me. Mrs. K was the one to mention going to California. We hadn’t taken a trip the summer before, and she said, “We ought to ride to California and take the PCH along the coast.” Probably, no one jumped up and started packing, but several certainly starting thinking. One mention leads to another mention which leads to final plans. For me, it was a dream I have had since I watched Then Came Bronson and spent my time reading On the Road. For all of us, we researched the trip and found places and things…

Every year a large amount of children and women take on the challenge of traveling to the United States, some legally, some illegally. Considering the risks women and children take everyday living in Central America, coming the the United States is a very big opportunity and uncertainty they are willing to take. It does not surprise me that an immense amount of people make the trip to America because of the positive possibilities mothers are given when arriving, especially when they come to make money to support loved ones they left behind. Although this decision is not surprising and is well understood, i do not agree with this choice that is made.…

I’ll never forget having to leave my friends and family behind and having to move across the country. It was the summer of 2008, and I was 10 years old at the time. The huge brown boxes, indicated the progressive yet subtle hints of our departure. I did not know why my father took the job in Washington D.C., but I did know that I resented him for it. However, it wasn’t long before I realized the move was for my own good. Back in California, my family lived in a tightly cramped two bedroom and one bathroom apartment. I soon realized moving to Virginia gave my family unspeakable opportunities, those that some take for granted, such as being able to live in a single family home. Coming to Virginia was similar to coming to a foreign country. The roads were different, the people were different, and the atmosphere was different; everything seemed foreign.…
