Triangles: Similarity and Congruence
Similarity and congruence
Two triangles are said to be similar if every angle of one triangle has the same measure as the corresponding angle in the other triangle. The corresponding sides of similar triangles have lengths that are in the same proportion, and this property is also sufficient to establish similarity.
A few basic theorems about similar triangles: * If two corresponding internal angles of two triangles have the same measure, the triangles are similar. * If two corresponding sides of two triangles are in proportion, and their included angles have the same measure, then the triangles are similar. (The included angle for any two sides of a polygon is the internal angle between those two sides.) * If three corresponding sides of two triangles are in proportion, then the triangles are similar.
Two triangles that are congruent have exactly the same size and shape: all pairs of corresponding interior angles are equal in measure, and all pairs of corresponding sides have the same length. (This is a total of six equalities, but three are often sufficient to prove congruence.)
Some sufficient conditions for a pair of triangles to be congruent are: * SAS Postulate: Two sides in a triangle have the same length as two sides in the other triangle, and the included angles have the same measure. * ASA: Two interior angles and the included side in a triangle have the same measure and length, respectively, as those in the other triangle. (The included side for a pair of angles is the side that is common to them.) * SSS: Each side of a triangle has the same length as a corresponding side of the other triangle. * AAS: Two angles and a corresponding (non-included) side in a triangle have the same measure and length, respectively, as those in the other triangle. (This is sometimes referred to as AAcorrS and then includes ASA above.) * Hypotenuse-Leg (HL) Theorem: The hypotenuse and a leg in a right triangle have the same length as those

More About Angles shows just how important angles are to all polygons, especially triangles. Angles are mostly what decide the shape of triangles. This activity was about grouping similar angles from a set of parallel line with another line intersecting both of them. This activity had an important connection to figuring out the final shadows equation because we put the problems in terms of triangles and triangles are heavily linked with angles. After all, triangles do mean three…

You can use the distance formula to show congruency for the sides. To show an angle is congruent to a corresponding angle, you can use slope or your compass and straightedge (Hint: Remember when you learned how to copy an angle?). You must show all work with the distance formula for the corresponding pair of sides and your work for the corresponding angles to receive full credit.…

The polygon unit is huge within the fifth grade course of study. After viewing the video, I have some new found knowledge regarding triangles and quadrilaterals. Prior to this video, I was unfamiliar with the term SSS congruence. This term means that two triangles, which have the exact length of sides, are congruent. This is a unique characteristic that holds true to only triangles. This feature makes triangles rigid. This term means that a triangle’s sides cannot be compromised. For example, if three side lengths compose a triangle, there’s only one triangle that can be formed with the lengths. Now, I have a deeper understanding about the angles, sides, and size of triangles; and how these attributes are used to classify the polygons. I also…

A triangle's relationship between intersecting angles and length make it the most reliable shape in architecture. When you change the angle of a triangle, you change its length as well. The triangle is a stable shape that is a great weight bearer because it's widest at its base. Triangles are often used as internal support pieces.…

Similarity- Similarity occurs when an object is the same as another object except in a different scale (size) then the original. In triangles, two are only similar if they have all the same angles or their sides are proportional to each other. Squares are always similar and rectangles must have proportional sides as well.…

To begin you must understand the Pythagoras theorem is an equation of a2 + b2 = c2. This simply means that the sum of the areas of the two squares formed along the two small sides of a right angled triangle equals the area of the square formed along the longest. Let a, b, and c be the three sides of a right angled triangle. To define, a right angled triangle is a triangle in which any one of the angles is equal to 90 degrees. The longest side of the right angled triangle is called the 'hypotenuse '. Once you have this basic understanding you can apply the understanding that if a, b, and c are positive integers, they are called Pythagorean Triples.…

On completion of the investigation I had learned many new important qualities associated with the intersecting chords within a circle theorems. The three theorems studied in this investigation include: Two chords intersecting externally, two chords intersecting internally and the intersection of a chord and tangent. Each theorem can be used to determine different things (e.g. the tangent-chord theorem can be used to determine the approximate distance from the horizon a person is dependant on their height above the earth’s surface).…

An acute triangle with all angles and sides congruent, the angle is 60 degree. It is also known as the isosceles triangle with one 60 degree angle. The sum of two sides is greater of the third side and the difference of two sides is smaller than the third one. Each bisector, altitude and angular bisector of a side is coincident. Equilateral triangle is a symmetrical figure and it has three symmetric axes, each bisector, altitude and angular bisector of a side locates in the symmetric axes. The circumcenter, incenter, orthocenter and center of gravity are the center of circle.…
