Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Case Study
The Triangle workers went on strike seeking better wages and hours, improved working conditions and union representation. The owners of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, Max Blanck and Isaac Harris, negotiated with strikers an increase in wages and working conditions, but refused to allow unions to organize in their factory. The factory workers agreed to go back to work without union representation. How would these factory workers have benefited from being part of the union? Would this has improved the safety conditions of the factory or was more government involvement necessary?

    Since there was no groundwork to rationalize and show examples of the success of organized labor, it was nearly impossible to make it work at this time. If unions were going to work, striking would have to be effective and clearly, they weren't. In the 1860's, the National Labor Union was formed to unify workers in fighting for higher wages, an 8 hour work day and various social causes and it set the stage for many failing unions to come. In 1877, railroad workers in this union from across the country took part in an enormous strike that resulted in mass violence and very few reforms. Afterwards, a editorial in The New York Times stated: "the strike is apparently hopeless, and must be regarded as nothing more than a rash and spiteful demonstration of resentment by men too ignorant or too reckless to understand their own interests" (Document B). This editorial, which was clearly in favor of labor reforms, was acknowledging that this method of fighting was not going to work for the laborers at this time. A failure of this magnitude so early on in the movement should have been enough to put it to halt, however, year after year, strikes were breaking and little was being done in the workers favors.     The Triangle Shirtwaist factory fire was, in my opinion, one of the most tragic events in history. The workers in the factory were not treated with respect or fairness. The workers were forced to work tremendously long hours and received little pay. Perhaps one of the biggest shocks to me was the fact that the workers had to pay for the thread, the power that their machine used, and buy a garments if the shirtwaist was not made correctly. There was no government oversight over working conditions, there were no laws protecting the workers, and there was physically no protection for the workers.     The Triangle Waist Factory was a three story building on top of the Asch Building, occupied with around 500, mostly female, workers from 16 to 23 years of age, this was recorded by the New York Times newspaper.[1] Even though in the building, the workers were spaced very poorly, barely a few feet away from each other, working in rough conditions, there was no worry of a fire, the building was fireproof.
