Toulmin Model
Earth: Our Gift From God
Brooklynn McMurray
Liberty University

Abstract
This paper presents a Toulmin model argument for the care and usage of the Earth and its natural resources as dictated by God in the Holy Bible (NIV). The Old Testament provides many guidelines for man to live fruitfully on Earth. Because it was made by God and given to us, we must follow the guidelines that he has set forth in the care and preservation of our planet.

Earth: Our Gift From God
Before God created man, he created the heavens and the Earth. Anyone who has read Genesis can plainly see that Earth was created by God as a place for man to dwell. However, God didn’t just give us shelter and leave us to our own devices. God made the Earth specifically

We are mortal, and therefore need many things. Our rivers and springs provide the water we drink. Our fields and farms provide the food that we eat. Our forests produce oxygen for us to breathe. Man and all of the world’s animals survive and thrive because God designed the Earth to provide for our needs. Isaiah 43:20-21 states, “ The wild animals honor me, the jackals and the owls, because I provide water in the desert and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise.” All of the ‘long lost’ rainforest cures or super foods are just what they have always been – gifts from God to man. Just as we have been given dominion over animals, we have dominion over the Earth. Having dominion over something doesn’t just mean control; it means that you have the responsibility to care for those things in your …show more content…
Some of them refer to the book of Genesis where God charges man with the keeping of animals. They think that because we are higher on the ‘food chain’, we do not have to care for them. In countless verses God and Jesus remind us that we must care for animals because they are God’s creatures and part of his creation. All that God has made is special and dear to him. Also, many skeptics often refer to the book of Revelations, where the Apostle John talks about God creating a ‘new Earth’ and burning the old one. They believe that this Earth will be physically destroyed and that God will create us a new home. However, John later goes on to talk about what will happen to those who disobey God and fail to care for his creation.
Revelations 11:18,” The nations were angry; and your wrath has come. The time has come for judging the dead, and for rewarding your servants the prophets and your saints and those who reverence your name, both small and great — and for destroying those who destroy the

To illustrate the Toulmin Model, there is a situation where two friends, Amy and Penny, are arguing about which one of them would buy a particular dress. Amy claims she would because it suits her. As a result, Penny tells her to prove it. Amy explains how the dress is in her size, the color goes well with her, and that Penny only has enough money to buy some pants. With this new information, the data, Penny makes a realization, the warrant, of how her friend has a point so she lets Amy buy the…

The bible is known for using stories as anecdotes and the Garden of Eden may be a symbol of the Earth itself. Genesis 2:15 says, “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.” God commanded mankind to guard and protect his creation of Earth.…

The information in the material shows of how a Toulmin model is used to analyze as well to create an argument outline. In this process the Toulmin model separates the components of an argument into pieces and analyze further more. It is composed of six points; the first point is the claim which is the main idea the essay. Secondly, we have the data where the writer use evidences to support its claim. Thirdly, is the warrant that connects the claim with the data. Fourthly, we have the backing which allows to support the warrant that becomes acceptable by the audience. Fifthly, we have the Rebuttals that states which is wrong or right of the argument from different points of view. Finally, we have the qualifiers which is a phrase that changes…

The rebuttal in the article is not quite implied or indirect. In my opinion though, I believe that the rebuttal might be for some people that the military is not for everyone. Another rebuttal for some people might be that the military(the Navy in this case) is not required for someone to become elite.…

At first, it may appear as though there are many different explanations of how the earth came to be; however, with a closer look one can see that all explanations have the same message. Science and the Bible, often considered polar opposites, tell the same story just with different words. For instance, Genesis One and The World’s Biggest Membrane describe an ongoing process of creation. It is clear in Genesis One that God did not get it right the first time. After creating man God thinks, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” (2:18-19) Immediately following this thought God forms ‘wild animals’ and ‘all the birds in the sky’, unfortunately, this attempt is unsuccessful. God has no success until he eventually creates a woman from the man, to be his helper. He goes through a process of trial and error, rather than it happening all at once. Therefore, it is clearly evident that some form of evolution took place before the earth was completed for the time being. Lewis Thomas’ ideas parallel this when talking about the atmosphere. He talks about…

“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” (Genesis 1:1) In Genesis 1 we are presented with the beginning of a divine drama that can only be examined and understood from the standpoint of faith. How long did it take? How did it happen, exactly? No one can answer these questions definitively. In fact, these mysteries are not the focus of the creation story. The purpose, rather, is for moral and spiritual revelation. God was very pleased with his creation. Six times throughout the process of creating, God stops, observes his handiwork and says, "It was very good." This is a great example of being a part of God's creation. Even when I feel unworthy of his pleasure, I have to remember that God made me and is pleased with me.…

In the beginning when God created light, the firmament, the vegetation, wildlife, rodents, birds, the fishes in the water, he had just created a food chain that would ensure continuation of life on earth. He then created Adam in HIS own image to head the other creations, to be on top of the food chain, hence, God had started the human race. Thousands of years after, the wildlife, the vegetation and everything HE created are still germane to human existence on earth. It is also worth of note that God worked for six days and rested on the seventh day, which is equivalent to our Monday through Saturday for work and we rest on the seventh day which is Sunday. Once again, God’s perfect idea of when to work and when to rest.…

The Claims of fact, value and policy are an important input to supporting and warrant the three legs of the communication (triangle). Back on “1958” Stephen Toulmin proposed the six terms as a model of communication designed to analyze the court room rhetorician’s argument. These included the three legs of communication, which are writer, subject, and audience supporting the claims of fact, value and policy, in others words, claim is an author’s proposition in which he/she is trying to prove a statement. In addition, Wayne Brockriede and Douglas Ehninger brought to coaction the six key terms in Toulmin model connecting the three legs of the communication (triangle), which are: writer, subject, and audience and it included as a support warrant the claims of fact, value and policy (Rottenberg, Winchell, 2015) .…

The structure of an argument reveals both the strengths and limits of the argument; nothing more, nothing less. An argument can only be as strong as it is meant to be. The writer’s goal is to make a close depiction of this argument without overstepping any boundaries. The Toulmin method is essentially a guide for analyzing the structures of arguments. Nevertheless, this method is more effective for arguments with no absolute truths or clear solutions. This lets the writer know how to use and understand the information. There are six elements for presenting arguments in the Toulmin method: claim, grounds, warrant, backing, qualifier, and rebuttal. These elements of a Toulmin analysis can help one as both a reader and a writer; however, there…

Christians realised the environment was more important then what they initially thought, and felt the need to care for the earth. A classic Christian text (Genesis 1-2) reflects that God created the universe out of nothing and continues to sustain all creation. It also suggests that the task of human beings is to reflect God’s creative love, and their covenant relationship with God, by caring for the earth as good stewards.…

Our environment first started when God went to work and put his plan into action. “In the beginning God created the Heavens and Earth.”(Genesis 1) For six days God was at work creating day and night, land and water, vegetation, all living beast of the earth, and then “God made mankind in his own image.”(v.27) God made us to care for his masterpiece, the environment. The environment was created for man by God, and man should in return care for God’s creation in the most outstanding and high respect.…

In the recent few decades, there has been a global realisation of the acceleration of the environments deterioration and the understanding that we, as humans, need to preserve our planet for future generations. In Islam, adherents submit themselves to Allah and a personal acceptance of ad-Din, otherwise known as the ‘life transaction’. Allah created humans as part of His original creation; this insinuates that humans are equal partners with nature. This is the belief of The Oneness of Creation; this belief is demonstrated through the teaching ‘Tawheed’. Tawheed is the fundamental statement of the oneness of the creator, from which all else follows. Allah says in the Qur’an (30:25) To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and the Earth…and it is He who originates creation”. This quote shows how Muslims believe that the whole of creation, the work of one ‘Originator’, works within a pattern. All of these parts, which include humankind, plays their own diverse roles, and in doing so assists all other parts. The Qur’an guides adherents on the path to moderation, balance and preservation instead of being selfish. It is the path between the extremes, and that all actions should be guided with the spirit of moderation, from consumption and production, to the use of natural resources. On the moderation of all things, Allah says “And We have willed you to be a community of the middle path” (Qur’an 2:143). The principles of moderation, balance and conservation are the core sustainable living as it provides the outlines for discernment, without which there are no limits to wasteful indulgence, affluence and greed.…
