Toulmin Argument Analysis
Hi Lindsay,

I completely agree with you when you mentioned how people do not utilize a Toulmin argument as much because a lot of people do not have strong opinions on topics anymore or at least they do not express it. When I was making my response to this prompt and had to find an example of where people use the Toulmin argument format I had some trouble. Your explanation helped to answer my problem.

I find the Toulmin method helpful in explaining and breaking down what a good argument looks like. It’s a purely logical method of making a claim based upon opinion but using facts warrants and backing to support the initial claim. I’ve noticed this argument model being used in news channels, economic debates, and some medical fields. When I applied this to my chosen major of biomedical engineering, I noticed that the Toulmin method is used quite often in lower scale research projects. Regarding small projects like minor adjustments for a new model of a stethoscope, this model can be used to defend the engineer that believes that the chosen stethoscope can be upscaled. When it comes to medical supplies and gadgets every project or researched…

Both Tobar and Viremontes depict LA as a city where characters are able to make an identity for themselves as well as being excluded and provoked by the city which allows it to transpire. In the beginning of the novel, Antonio said that he lived securely with his Spanish in LA: “He never felt held down to learn English.” (Tobar, 3). Additionally, a Spanish community was molded and it held an impact on the city. In Tobar’s novel, we can see after Antonio and Jose Juan are evicted, they find a lot of tents and shelters in the middle of the city: “Voices in the igloo-shaped tent now, people speaking in Spanish, English, men with central accents.” (Tobar, 13). This is a universal backdrop portrayal in East Los Angeles.…

Two separate arguments take place: the old vs the present, and then the present vs the new. The old is denounced with statements such as “those times have passed” (Tolstoy & Katz 137) and “What barbarous views of women and marriage!” (Tolstoy & Katz 139). Then Pozdnyshev jumps into the aftermath of this first argument and shakes them all up with his statement about how love is always temporary: “this preference for one [person] may last for years…more often for months, or perhaps for weeks, days, or hours” (Tolstoy & Katz 140). Pozdnyshev is portrayed as winning this argument, as he is given the last…

Louie Gohmert is a legislator in the Texas House of Representatives. He often takes a conservative view on situations, such as how he votes for bills and what committees he joins. Gohmert has been a legislature for several sessions now, and has had previous experience in politics prior to being elected to the House. Gohmert also comes from a strong religious background, which no doubt influences the way that he votes. He is considered a republican and has recently announced that he is going to challenge John Boehner, current Speaker of the House, for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives (On The Issues 2016). Gohmert is not afraid to take a strong stand for the bills that he believes in and speak out against those he does not. He votes for looser control over public schools and claims to be an originalist. Gohmert is sincere in his actions to keep the state conservative, and the actions he takes within his legislative position reflect that (Shook 1973, p 317).…

As stated in Lee Bollinger's article, "admissions policies do not meaningfully affect a white student's chances of admission" so there is no actual proof that affirmative action is reverse discrimination against whites. Also affirmative action does not demean individual accomplishment, but enhances it because according to Nell Irvin Painter "without affirmative action, it never would have occurred to any large, white research university to consider [her] for professional employment." So if anything, affirmative action helps individuals have more successful lives by providing people with better opportunities than they would otherwise have. I think that Lee Bollinger's argument is the strongest, since he provides concrete evidence and actual…

I choose to qualify Boorstin’s distinction that disagreements lead to arguments and dissensions lead to quarrels. I believe that Boorstin’s argument is valid when he claims that disagreements cause debates; during the presidential debates, two opposing sides are not in agreement with one another, therefore, they will debate over the topic. Another example is when a student is in a classroom setting and his or her peer makes a comment that the student does not accept to be true. The student will conduct an argument regarding the topic, however, both students will in the end feel as if they are still accepted.…

Ketcham’s article brings light upon the harsh truth that the world is incapable of handling itself along with the growth of human consumption. Humans are proud of their innovations in earth, but it is costing the planet. The authors of Limits affirms this when they argued that “‘The application of technological solutions alone has prolonged the period of population and industrial growth, but it has not removed the ultimate limits to that growth’" [1]. I agree with this quote. For example, in a recent article I read, scientists have figured out how to essentially “hack” a better environment— a process called solar geoengineering. Although it proved to be beneficial to the environment, the scientist asserted that there will be less incentive…

According to Eliana Dockterman, “ By all measures, this generation of American kids (ages 3 to 10) is the tech-savviest in history: 27% of them use tablets, 43% use smartphones, and 52% use laptops.” Eliana Dockterman’s goal in the passage is to build an argument that persuades the audience that there are benefits to early exposures to technology. She uses evidence, reasoning/ connecting claims, and persuasive elements to present her argument.…

Is anatomy destiny ? no ; destiny can’t be pre determined everybody has a choice from the day they’re born. I’m a strong believer that you’re a product of your environment and society , that’s why I find Mahin Hassibi argument to be very appealing . Mahin Hassibi has a lot of strong points in the debate , modern times shake up the old notions is what attracted me to Mahin Hassibi position . John l. Rinn and Michael Snyder point about limited sex-biased gene expression in the adult brain is also very strong , anytime you have scientific proof to back data it’s impressive . they both have strong points and a lot of scientific data to back it up their debate . Human behavior is just a very complicated topic to analyze because there are so many different variables involved .…

On her article Stillman brings up the point of how “in the old days they (ranchers) hired contractors to gun down mustangs and bring them their ears. Today, Big Beef still hires guns- Politicians who set policy for the Bureau of Land Management…” Stillman is clearly opposing to the bill signed by ex-president Bush, which left the wild horses unprotected. Throughout her article she talks about how government involvement might affect the icon that wild horses represent both ways, positively and negatively. The bill signed my ex-president Nixon protected wild horses and burros from those who wanted to take them to the slaughterhouses; however, the legislation passed my ex-president Bush made a turn around to what Nixon had done in benefit of…

Growing up in this millennial generation has been different from the others. The economy that we live in today has different values than what our parents and grandparents have gone through. Our environment has become a world wide sensation and is a topic of discussion in almost every learning environment. In this day and age you could do so much to help the world, economy and your community. This short documentary discussed the environment and ways for us to not cause much stress on it. Each great thinker came up with their own way to make the planet a better place. Each idea that they came up with were interesting. The one I felt like I could relate to the most is William McDonough. I loved his idea because he touched on the concept of recycling…

There are always two sides of the same coin, and the coin is the subject of existence. To go against Unger’s, I Do Not Exist, I will use Descartes view of dualism and the fact that, according to him, humans do exist. Yes, there are other views of existence that could go against both of these philosophical views, but Unger and Descartes really counterbalance each other. As mentioned before, Unger explains he doesn’t exist due to anything which exists having a finite amount of small parts. If these parts were continually taken away, one could exist until at one point it would not, due to losing all their parts. In respect to Unger, his argument is correct when dealing with objects such as “tables or chairs, rocks or stones or ordinary stars,”…

To test the thesis that argument can be found everywhere, read “The Argument Culture” starting on page (636) [634]. In an MS Word document, copy and paste an example of an argument and explain why it can be defined as such. Your example should focus on an issue about which there is significant and rational disagreement. Summarize the issue and spell out the reasons and evidence offered. This is most easily achieved by completing the statement “This arguer wants us to believe . . . because . . ..” (See #1 of “Practice,” page (680) [678].)…
