What is a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction is the process of removing a tooth from the mouth. The procedure may need to be done for a number of reasons. Sometimes before getting braces, a tooth needs to be removed in order for the teeth to have enough room to move into their proper location and order for a straight smile. In other cases, a tooth may need to be removed because it has decayed or has become loose due to gum disease. Removing it is the first step in stopping the pain and infection and must be done before receiving a dental implant, bridge or dentures. What Happens During a Tooth Extraction?

Your dentist will first numb your mouth using either a local or general anesthetic. A local anesthetic is normally used when just one tooth needs to be extracted. After 24 hours, you can gently swish with warm salt water that can be made by mixing one teaspoon of table salt with eight ounces of warm water. This should be done several times a day in order to reduce pain, reduce swelling and decrease the risk of infection. Take it easy and rest our head at an incline after you return home to reduce the risk of bleeding. When you feel up to it, you can eat soft foods, such as soup, mashed potatoes, well-cooked vegetables and pudding. Avoid eating anything that is tough or chewy until your mouth has completely
