Mario, or originally known as Jump Man, was actually projected to be a carpenter. But, after he was always in a feud against Donkey Kong, a havoc causing gorilla, he would be seen as an Italian Plumber (Sims). Mario has a little brother named Luigi. Luigi was born/created only 2 years after Mario in 1983. Mario and Luigi are always teaming up to help each other defeat any crime that happens amongst their world. Specifically, Princess Peach is always in trouble with Bowser, King Koopa. Princess Peach is the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, which is constantly under attack by Bowser. She is portrayed as the damsel in distress (Newman). Pursuing this further, Princess Peach is characterized as Mario’s true love because he is always risking his life to save her every time…
In 1962, The Dreamettes, a hopeful girl group from Chicago, enter the famous Amateur Night talent competition at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York ("I'm Lookin' for Something", "Goin' Downtown", "Takin' the Long Way Home"). The group is composed of full-figured lead singer Effie White and best friends, Deena Jones and Lorrell Robinson. For the contest, the Dreamettes sing "Move (You're Steppin' on My Heart)", a song written by Effie's brother, C.C., who accompanies them to the talent show. Unfortunately, they lose the talent show, but backstage, the girls and C.C. meet Curtis Taylor, Jr., a used-car salesman who becomes the Dreamettes' manager.…

Are you a parent of a developing young girl? Have you noticed the rapid physical changes they’re going through? If so, you are not alone. Countless parents are experiencing this, and so is Dave Barry. He recently explained this topic in his editorial, “Where Did My Little Girl Go?” and for me, I completely understand his point of view. It seems as though the duration of puberty for girls is instantaneous.…

Drag queens are one of the highest forms of entertainment nowadays. Once looked upon as freaks, as some might still look down on them today, there’s no denying that these queens have become mainstream with popular shows like “RuPaul’s Drag Race”. These queens are still humans and they all convey a message. A message of love and acceptance. With changing times, recently at the New York Public Library, an event was hosted called “drag queen story time”. One would ask themselves “drag queen story time and why?”.…

Psychological androgyny is when one’s personality traits are capable of being two different things at once. For example, one who is aggressive is also nurturant at the same time no matter the gender. Advantages of this area is that one can use many traits to achieve a desire or talent. They can pool in more traits than one who is not androgyny. They may have higher self esteem and more stable. They may also have more confidence about stressful areas and…
I found the article written by Emily W. Kane so insightful and it reminded me very much of the film Tough Guise 2 by Jackson Katz. We find gender nonconformity of girls much easier to accept than that of boys. Girls can dress like boys and play sports like boys and they will simply be considered just a “tomboy”. However if boys choose to behave more feminine, they are constantly bombarded with insults such as “fag, pussy, or bitch”. Although often brushed off the shoulder, these insults can cause a boy to feel…
Imagine a perfect summer day where you are with your friends in the warm and breezy climate. As a kid, life was always fun, games, and curiosity. Money was never something a kid would waste time thinking of doing. The only thing that mattered is what a kid wants to do now, not what they want to do in the future. Curiosity was one of the few shields that blinded kids and made them focus on the present. Their curiosity would always remain persistent until they find the answer they are looking for. In Lee’s brilliant novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, two kids live their childhood by simply keeping everything simple. Scout, a sassy tomboy, lives her life in the 1900s with no regard for the great depression or her gender. Upon his own volition,…

The determination of gender identity is much deeper than whether a person is born a male or a female. The exact identifier that separates gender identity is currently unknown but researchers believe that genetics, hormones, reproductive organs, biological, and environmental factors all play a role in distinguishing a person’s gender identity. A person’s physical gender and their sense of gender are formed at two different times in two different parts of the body. A person’s gender is whether they are born male or female, but the way they identify themselves may be the opposite, which is not uncommon and has occurred since the beginning of time. In culture males are known to be the stronger, more aggressive sex, while females are the fairer, more nurturing sex. Usually, by the age of four, individuals have identified their gender identities aside from what gender they were born as physically. Throughout this paper, I will discuss the biological factors of gender identity (nature), environmental factors (nurture), and the role between hormones and behavior, and how these interactions all affect the determination of one’s gender identity.…
Let’s say you’re a little girl in a toy store. You walk down the aisles, touching all of the toys available to you. How lovely to have all of these things to play with! You finally land on a box of action figures. When you show them to your mother, she wrinkles her nose at the superheroes and army men. “Wouldn’t you like a doll instead?” she asks. You don’t know how to answer. Maybe she’s right. After all, that’s what all the other girls want.…
Both types essentially same the same thing: there is something wrong with being female. In type 2, we structure the entire character on saying that for some reason it is wrong to present yourself in traditional feminine ways. Essentially, we structure the character to be a male in a female body. In type 1, we take those feminine characteristics and gently, or not so gently, poke fun of them. Obviously, there is something wrong with liking shopping, makeup, fashion, cooking, or anything else viewed as a female art. But Elle Woods says no to all of that.…
