African Americans are not treated as equals in any situation, even in the courts where men are supposed to be equal. In fact intolerance in Maycomb is not just reserved for the negroes but also to those who don’t quite fit the Maycomb mould. In some cases, possible heroes are defeated due to the circumstances in which they have been thrown into. Mayella Ewell is the perfect example, where she is the victim of an injust and insular society.
