To Kill A Mockingbird Prep Curriculum Next Year Analysis
This year we read and studied the novel To Kill a Mockingbird and I think this novel shouldn’t be in the Lise Prep curriculum next year. I am writing this letter to say that I am opposing the common idea “ To Kill a Mockingbird is a novel a-must read”. Even this novel has some good points about “courage”, I believe this novel shouldn’t be in the Prep curriculum next year because it didn’t achieve its theme/message about racism, there are some parts can be taken offensive and there are some other parts which most students don’t like such as the mood, setting of the book and Harper Lee’s condition as an author. And I am not saying it does not. In the novel there are some definitions/explanations of courage.“ For a number of reasons. The main one is, if I didn’t I couldn’t hold up my head in town. I couldn’t represent this country in the legislature. I couldn’t even tell you or Jem not to do something again” (101) says Atticus as a reply to Scout who asked that if he knew he was going to lose the case why did he be the lawyer of Tom Robinson. With his this quote, Atticus made his point about courage like this: “Even if you know you are going to lose, you should compete and struggle to keep your head straight, be proud and satisfied about what you did”. For Scout courage is more physical. For example her rolling over with the truck tire is an example of courage for her. And one huge courage example in the novel is that Boo Radley got out of the house and rescued Jem and Scout. In that point courage was to be ready for a change ( getting out from the house) and making a risky move. But, even there are some different and nice points about courage in the novel, there are some parts shouldn’t be ignored. There are many offensive words in the book, the message/theme that is tried to be given is not achieved and the book opposes itself making racism while criticizing it. Also the book is not liked by preps because of the mood it gives, the very specific place it has and the culture that caused some hard moments to understand the whole
