“To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee is a perfect example of how the plot progression of the story was closely related to the character development. Lee used Jean Louise, also known as “Scout” as a main model of character development, as she grows through her understandings of racism, how to handle social situations and her intelligence . The plot progression throughout the novel was very close in relationship of bildungsroman in the characters personal stories. This book being fiction is not true but it depicts how life was during the time period of the 1930’s. The characters also are very close to portraying common people of the time in Macon County of Alabama.…

The book”To Kill A Mockingbird”, there are a lot of characters that have power. One of those characters is Mayella Ewell. In this paper, Mayella Ewell using her class, gender, and race will prove how and why she has power. She has power because of her gender and race mostly. But he class does play a part in why she has power. In the 1930 there were laws that keep blacks and whites separated. Some of the laws were set to keep black men and white women or the other way around from intermingling. Mayella Ewell is an white young woman that is very poor and is abused by her father. Tom Robinson is a older black man that helps Mayella out by doing stuff she can not do. But poor old Tom gets accused of raping Mayella. Tn the 1930, if you were black and you were accused of doing something to a white person, the white person always won the case. Since Tom was an African American and Mayella was white, he was found guilty. As a result, this shows you some reasons why Mayella has power.…

Mayella does not have any power at all, according to the standards of class. For example, in the passage there was a piece of evidence that really stood out to me clearly saying that she is powerless and here it is: “Maycomb gave them Christmas baskets, welfare money, and the back of its hand. Tom…

I believe in judging someone by their actions and character rather than by the color of their skin and sexuality. This I believe because there is good and bad in all of us. The color of our skin does not depict the flaws we have. In the second amendment it states that all men are created equal, but we still do not treat each other equally. Defending Tom Robinson was not easy because I knew that from the minute Mayella opened her mouth Tom was a dead man. But everyone including a black man deserves a second chance. How could I ever tell my own children “You never really understand a person until you consider things from their point of view - until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” if I didn’t pick up Tom’s case because I was afraid of what people would think of me. When people say things about me like “Atticus Finch is the same in his house as he is on the public streets” why would I prove them wrong? You are only as good as you portray yourself to be. But when you are a black man in the town of Maycomb, Alabama you were never dealt the good hand to begin with. Sadly Tom never got a second chance. Tom was a good man but because of the color of his skin he was not treated as fairly as the rest of us.…

Mayella Ewell is the first minor character I shall discuss; a beacon of racial prejudice and the injustice of the courthouses. She is considered to be trash along with the rest of the Ewell's; despite the fact that she is one of the few Ewell's who can read and write. As well as being literate she tries her best to make that most of what she's got, "the quote about the flowers she keeps". Despite her decency compared to the others in her family Mayella still only cares for her own wellbeing.…

Some people may not agree with the idea that being quick to judge is wrong. Indeed, in some situations making a quick judgment may be absolutely necessary for one’s safety. In other situations, quick judgment may lead to misjudgment. For example, the people of Maycomb judged the Ewell’s family because they lived in a dump and they couldn’t hold a job. While Bob Ewell does in fact fit this judgment, not all of the Ewell’s do. Mayella Ewell lives in the same place as Bob, yet she is not like him. Even though the Ewells yard is trash, as stated in chapter 17 (pg. 170), Mayella was able to keep six “Brilliant red Geranium”. This proves that Maycomb has misjudged Mayella.…
