To Celebrate Getting Older
45 Lessons

Regina Brett 90 years old

To celebrate growing older, I once wrote the “ 45 lessons ” life taught me.

This is something we should all read at least once a week!! Please, make sure you read to the end.

1) Life isn't fair, but it's still good.

2) When in doubt, just take the next small step.

3) Life is too short to waste time hating anyone.

4) Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends and parents will. Stay in touch.

5) Pay off your credit cards every month.

6) You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree.

7) Cry with someone.. It's more healing than crying alone.

8) It's OK to get angry with God. He can take it.

9) Save for retirement starting with your first paycheck.

10) When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile.

11) Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present.

12) It's OK to let your children see you cry.

13) Don't compare your life to others. You have no idea what their journey is all about.

14)

It is quite interesting to look at my life thus far and see how specific things helped me – or forced me – to develop. Every sad or hurtful thing included in this paper has given me a more positive quality in some way. I do not regret anything that I have done because it all has shaped me into the woman I am today, and I think that I like her. Parents play a tremendous role in how one develops, I see now why secure attachments are so important. Parents are the first line of defense when it comes to a person’s psychological well-being. If parents do not do a good job of protecting their child, it will lead to difficulties later in life. The role of stress and trauma are closely related in development, after all one cannot have trauma without stress. From writing this paper I have learned that it is the biggest heartaches that make you stronger as a person. And even though you may not see the positive impact of the people close to you on a day-to-day basis, they help shape you as a person. I am incredibly thankful for the few people who accept me for who I have become and will treasure them forever. I may be a fatherless “daddy’s girl,” but I will not let that stop me from striving to make him…

I never thought me, of all people, would experience such a sorrowful day. I have tried to forget it time and time again; but the reality is I will always remember every miniscule detail, moment, word, and facial expression on that particular day. My heart managed to shatter into a million pieces, leaving me without a reason to pursue my existence. My salty tears freely rolled down my warm cheeks, causing my eyes to burn sensationally. I remember mourning on the comforting shoulders of my family members, as they too were consumed by their feelings. The most valuable lesson that beared a reservation in my spirit was to cherish every moment and loved one, for tomorrow is not guaranteed to anyone. I wish I could have fathom this reality before the climactic tragedy struck me like a ton of bricks. Although death is normal, it seemed almost foreign when it abducted the life of my favorite uncle.…

Alcoholics Anonymous is a close-knit program which is a very successful method of recovery for alcoholism. The program was the first of many to adopt the twelve step approach to recovery. This program is three dimensional: spiritually, mentally and physically which is represented in the twelve steps. The steps stress anonymousness, kindness and rejuvenation within all members. It gives recovering alcoholics a place to feel comfortable and unashamed to know others are going through the same recovery. Members are encouraged to be sponsored by a companion recovering alcoholic with more experience in the program to help to better understand AA. The sponsor is the same gender as the member and usually the relationship between the two is a gift that both members can benefit from.…

When we drive around town and get a milkshake, it means so much more now that I know our time together isn’t limitless. More than anything, I’m finally beginning to see everything my dad does for me—even after chemo, he still cracks a joke. Even when he’s tired and fatigued, he asks how my day was. At the end of the day, it’s a parent’s duty to teach their children important life lessons, and my dad has unintentionally taught me the most important lesson of all. Just by watching him these past couple months, I’ve learned how to handle adversity with grace and to always look on the bright…

Number 41: “Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need.” This is going to sound really cheesy and cliché, especially since I’m a middle school kid, who are some of the most jealous and materialistic people I’ve ever experienced, BUT from the point of view of a 90 year-old who’s been through all the envy already and has realized its worthless, all you really need is a loving family, food, and a roof over your head.…
