Three Different Types Of Spina Bifida
Every year, 1,500 babies are born with this defect (source). There are three different types of spina bifida. Spina bifida occulta, meningocele, and myelomeningocele (source). The location of sina bifida most commonly occurs in the lower back, although ourences in the middle and upper back are possible. Occulta has little to no symptoms. Signs of this type can be a hairy patch, dimple, dark spot, or swelling on the back at the site of spina bifida. Meningocele typically causes mild problems with a sac of fluid present at the gap in the spine. The most severe form of spina bifida, Myelomeningocele, is also called open spina bifida (source).     Spina Bifida is idiopathic meaning there is no cause to why this occurs. The word spina bifida means cleft spine which is the incomplete development of the CNS. Scientists suspect that the lack of folic acid in the mothers diet could cause a defect in the neural tube.
