Thomas Hobbes Against Prostitution

Thomas Hobbes was an atheist and a republican who believed everyone was born selfish and that peace and security were fundamental to society. In regards to his philosophy, Hobbes would be against the legalization of prostitution. It teaches children and young adults that it is okay to sell your body and be seen as an object. It also puts people at a higher risk of catching a sexually transmitted disease which doctors will waste thousands of dollars trying to treat, even though there is no cure. Finally, Prostitution is a very dangerous job which could result in in physical abuse, and in extreme cases, death. Al in all, Thomas Hobbes would not support prostitution because it sets a bad example for adolescents and young teens, it is a bad business
This kind of business can teach the adolescents, especially young girls, that it is okay to be used, which can further develop into an abusive relationship down the road for them. Thomas Hobbes would argue that this would create disaster instead of peace due to the fact of lack of respect and how a person should be treated; with respect and dignity-not like an item or animal. Thomas Hobbes would also argue that Prostitution should be illegal because it has the potential to spread diseases such as STI’s. According to health research, “One in five [people] are unaware they have a virus” (Sex Crimes) and with that information coinciding with the fact that prostitutes have sex on average with 300 people per year (The Prostitution Statistics You Have To Know), prostitutes have a greater risk of contracting a disease. Since Thomas Hobbes is republican and is more-so pro-business, he would look at this from the perspective as a business move. It would cost the healthcare system thousands of dollars to try and find a cure, when the best they may be able to do is be able to treat it for a little while, the problem still
