This I Believe Essay I believe in Christmas. I believe that the Christmas season changes many lives, whether people realize how important giving is, or they realize there is hope no matter what situation they are in. In second grade, my school helped out at a homeless shelter. We donated toys, food, and supplies for the families. I brought a Barbie doll because I knew there was a little girl out there, who maybe has never had one but has always wanted one so badly, would finally get what she had been hoping for. The homeless shelter was beautiful. It had a big tree with lights and decorations hung all over the shelter. The families looked so happy. Even with the problems they faced, they still managed to put on a smile and be happy. Seeing the homeless shelter and having that experience really made me appreciate what I have and it also made me want to makes someone else’s life easier and happier. For me, the Christmas season always seems happy and joyful. I love everything about it, the lights, the decorations, the trees, the cold weather, everything, so I want others around me to be happy too. It’s easy to get distracted during Christmas time though. Many people are buying presents for their children and partners, but forget about the families who aren’t spending hundreds of dollars on presents for their children, and not because they don’t want to, they just can’t. When I think about that, I feel bad because I can’t imagine how hard it would be to not be able to give your child the only thing they have asked for all year. That is why, ever since the second grade, I try to keep in mind that there are many ways to bring a smile to people’s faces, just by the little things that anyone can do. Donate a dollar to the Salvation Army. Donate toys to their schools toy drive. Volunteer and help out in their community. These are only some of the many ways to make someone’s life happier. I believe in Christmas, that it has the power to bring everyone together and remind

The homeless people I served meals to hated being there. They hated the cloths they wore. They hated having to be feed in order to live. The homeless people there were not like the ones who beg on the street for money. These people were unfortunate to be in there situation, and they were trying to get back on there feet. Their purpose of being at Faith City was to change their life around. I could tell that they did not see many volunteers there, so they were grateful for me for caring for there poor souls. These people never take anything for granted because everything in their life is a struggle. Anything donated will never go to waste, but it will get used to its last straw. The homeless know that they do not get much opportunity so they have to make the most of everything. That is what the taught me, and that is how I want to life my life after this…

I do thing like this because, it is the right thing to do. I give a lot of credit to the military for stressing community service. I of course chose the American Legion to help out because they support veterans which is very important to me but they also help others. This is a vital thing especially at this time of year when there are so many that need help. No matter which way you look at Christmas, form the religious aspect or more of secular, it is still about helping each other. Jesus was definitely a helper of poor and needy and Santa Claus represents that of…

My family and I participate in sponsoring a family for Christmas each year. We go to the Social Apostolate or Interfaith Hospitality and buy gifts for a family in need. During this process, the family writes letters telling us about their lives, needs, and wants. Honestly, doing this is my favorite part about Christmas. Jesus wants us to help those in need and I believe by doing this we are doing what He wants.…

Is it just me or are the holidays in America becoming more and more commercialized? The original purposes for holidays are swept under the rug and it is all about what we can get. It was November 9th and I was driving home from school, flipping through radio stations when I heard the Christmas carols. I yelled, “NO!” and completely shut the radio off. It was not even Thanksgiving yet and they were playing Christmas music! Since Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, I was a little put off by this. Why are they playing these songs already? What about Thanksgiving? Heck, what about Hanukkah? Why aren’t there Thanksgiving carols? That is when I decided I was going to write…

Not all of us are blessed and able to come home to a roof over our head, food on the table, daily necessities, and happy moments to look back on. Some of us are fighting for shelter, starving for food, and praying for a smile. As I read Rachel and Her Children I found myself seeing things from the homeless perspective. Homeless does not necessarily mean they do not have a roof over there head. Homeless now to me means not having a place to feel safe and call your home your own.…

    Christmas vs Thanksgiving

Christmas is a kid’s favorite holidays for really only one reason: presents. We live in a society where materialistic things outweigh almost anything else. We would do almost anything to get the new iPhone, and we have an annual “buy as much as you can” day, also known as Black Friday. Christmas, unfortunately, has gone away from its religious origins and has been turned into the most expensive holiday of the year. Although I am sitting here trashing Christmas, I do still enjoy the snow and the decorations; who doesn’t? Snow sets the stage for Santa, and decorations make it all the merrier. Twinkling lights accompany almost every roof and dance in the cold winter gusts. The weather and feel of Christmas couldn’t be more perfect for the holiday; cold keeps us in the house and makes the fire feel all the more wonderful, while sugary treats and presents make our tummies and shelves feel good. Unfortunately for Christmas, my love for the day has diminished. I have grown up to see how selfish our society is during this time of year and now different we treat the holiday than it is actually supposed…

I was raised in a very religious catholic home. I was the middle child of five children in a Hispanic family. I grew up in a small Hispanic community near Mexico. As we were growing up we were exposed to people living in poverty and we were expected to help them with what we had. Even though we were not a rich family we would give we would make the effort to donate food and the necessary items to the needy families. We would donate dinners on Christmas Eve to the most unfortunate families with small children for the holiday. This tradition continues to be in my family and now my children are experiencing it. My mother and father have always taught us values and morals. I grew up with the belief to help out people in need. While I was growing up I wanted to be a…

Dale Partridge once said, 'You were born with the ability to change someone's life, don't waste it." Throughout our lives, most people choose to ignore helping those in need. Many of those people, did not choose to be in a situation where they have to ask for help. At one point, homeless people had dreams of becoming someone important in life. Despite the situations these people have gone through , helping the homeless can change our community by lowering crime rates, and having hard workers.…

Finally, when I moved to New Orleans I started volunteer work at the Children’s Hospital and helped with pop up clinics for the Latino community twice. Overall I found that helping others shouldn't be something seen as duty or mandatory, it should be spontaneous. Through others experiences and hardships we learn and grow as human beings, not only did I enjoy helping others but I felt that it helped me with my problems. Having moved around so much and meet so many people and living by myself so many years I came to truly be thankful for my blessings and specially for my hardships. Hermann Hesse once said, "I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value." Helping others made me realize that we all need help and that my way to help others would be through their health. It also taught me not to judge anybody, especially if you don't know what they have been through. I am hard believer that everything happens for a reason, and all the weekends I spend watching my parents help others helping others myself made me the determined person that I am today. Finally, the most important lesson I learned was to never give up, no matter how hard the task is or how bad the problem is there will always be someone willing to help and you can always be both sides to that, the helper or the one who needs…

Mount Diablo USD runs the HOPE (Homeless Outreach Program for Education) program which is a specific program for our families in transition. The idea behind the Wish program was that families in the community, who have the resources, will buy a holiday gift for a child/children in a transitional family to brighten up their Holiday season. My role was to contact several transitional families and get the details of the gifts the child/children wanted and to submit all the paperwork to the HOPE office. I can relate this work to one of the principles of social work which is “respecting the inherent dignity and worth of the person” and a phrase within that value which states to “treat each person in a caring and respectful fashion”. I also believe the whole ethos of the Holiday Wish program is generally in harmony with the mission of Social Work which to is to “enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in…

I have listed two good reasons why I like Christmas above all holidays, but the main reason actually is because of the family. See most people have family all over the place so when the holiday comes around they all meet up and they all get full of joy for being able to finally see them again. Another reason why spending time with the family is the best is because you get to hear all of those great stories they tell. These are the main reasons why I like…

Christmas is my favorite holiday. It’s the time of year when I accompany my mother, sister or friends to the store to buy gifts for other people. We decorate our homes to bring cheer to our friends and families. We hang our light on the outside of the homes to brighten the spirits of our friends, neighbors, and strangers, who drive by to see the colored lights. This holiday is my favorite because on this particular day I get the quality time to spend with my family, it’s relaxing and personally it brings joy and spirit into my life.…
