Thicketwood Ltd

Problem Statement
The current production process that Thicketwood Ltd is utilizing can no longer keep with the demand of custom kitchen cabinets. Management must implement a new step to the production line to increase efficiency; however, they must also maintain quality as the customers that are purchasing these cabinets expect top quality for the amount of money they are paying.

Problems/Sub problems/Issues
In the Thicketwood Ltd case there are a few problems and issues that need to be addressed immediately in order to keep up with demand. The current process that involves strictly human labor is no longer efficient as the demand for cabinets continues to increase. The current process has 5 steps which include cutting, drilling, routing, assembling, and finishing the cabinets. The third step in this process takes the longest amount of time to complete and also has the highest number of employees working on it. This step causes a bottleneck and everything is becoming backed up at this stage. Management needs to implement a change in order to try to become more efficient and meet demand but also continue to make quality cabinets. The company has come across an option that they believe will eliminate the bottleneck and allow the supply to meet demand. The option the company believes would be the most beneficial is a Computer Numeric Controlled (CNC) router. The decision that must be made is either to purchase the new machine or the old machine. Each machine has a different price and different life expectancy. By purchasing and implementing this machine to the production process it would also eliminate jobs on the production line, which may result in employees being transferred to different areas or may cause some layoffs which as a result can have a negative impact on the relationship between workers and management which is currently very good as a result of wages and benefits and there have

Observing the chart you can see that if the volume is under 25 units the best choice is outsourcing. Above that 25 unit line, the least costly method is reconditioning the current machines. This stays true until the units reach 300. Purchasing new equipment has the lowest cost according to the graph for quantities over 300. Because we are interested in volumes of 1,000 to compare out variable costs at, according to the graph, this would be our best option.…

Guillermo Furniture manufacturing, located in Senora, Mexico, has been a popular furniture manufacturing company in the area for years until the late 1990s when new competitors from overseas entered the market and an influx of people and jobs raised the cost of labor substantially. Although Guillermo was well established in his business and the work was reliable, he was unable to keep up with the competitors and their high-tech approach to furniture making. “Firms can overcome resource constraints and achieve superior innovative performance not only by using internal resources but also by acquiring knowledge-based capabilities from alliance partners” (Zhang, Shu, & Jiang, 2010, p. 74). Guillermo must look at the different alternatives available to him. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the different alternatives available to Guillermo. This paper will also present a financial analysis, including a sensitivity analysis, determine the WACC, and calculate NPVs for the base case and sensitivities.…

Computer-Image’s proposal comes with a contract of 3 years which can be cancelled but with a 45 day warning before cancelling however by not outsourcing they will not need any kind of legal contract because everything done in the firm is internal. The cost with them will be $265 cheaper than the cost per chasses with insourcing, it would only cost $225 compared to $490. The number of chasses that can be produced per year is also more favorable with their outsourcing option. They can get from a minimum of 1000 chasses to 2500 maximum which is perfect considering that they expect a demand for 1250 and they can still keep expanding their market share to double in the time that this contract is valid however they cannot drop below 1250 chasses. Internally they do not have a minimum limit and maximum of 2000 which they can’t exceed which limits growth more than their outsourcing option, and adding that minimum could motivate the employees to reach higher targets and result in growth. The cost for Computer Image to do the designing is higher than TFC’s by $100,000 because it will be $300,000 but this is an extra cost that’s worth paying since this company is a professional company and there will be less room for error and with them doing it TFC’s employees can focus on meeting the higher demand and providing better customer service. This company will also be using advanced technology…

To: Richard Sullivan From: im79111 Date: Jun. 1, 2011 Re: Detroit Plant – Heavy Equipment Division (HED) This memo is to identify and analyze the key issues of Detroit plant in Heavy Equipment Division and provide reasonable solutions to the management team. 1, Background Heavy Equipment Division (HED) of the Wriston Manufacturing Corporation is a large axle and brake manufacturer, which accounted for approximately 11.2% of the Wriston’s total revenues. There are 9 on-stream plants in the division and a new one is still under construction. The Detroit plant, the first plant of the division, was facing finance and productivity problems for several years. To address this problem, we are trying to review the situation to assess the feasibility of whether the plant should be closed, and what corresponding actions should be taken. 2 , Issue The Detroit plant acts as an incubator in the division, almost all the products have been developed in Detroit, but when the products became mature, it will be transferred to other plants. As a result, the Detroit plant currently produces 3 categories of low-volume products, on-highway axles, off-highway axles and the replacement parts for all three of the division’s product line. It is operated as a job shop, the complex 20-product-families compounding reduce the producing efficiency and limit Detroit to generate enough profit. Since the plants will be reviewed separately by ROA, Detroit could not compete with other flow shops like Saginaw, the investment was kept on declining for 8 years. Compare with other plants, Detroit has a very heavy overhead burden. Many of the machine tools are out of date. The facilities are unplanned and may need to be repaired or replaced in a short term.…

Product life-cycles are getting shorter: products used to enjoy a 30-40 year lifecycle, but now the lifecycle is only 3-5 years tops. This represents a simple, unstable dimension in the environment. The company is able to cope with this by having a horizontal, matrix style structure, with an incidence command system in place to deal with the ever-changing environment and marketplace. There is also a need for more resources to help with the rapid growth that XEL is experiencing. Profits have risen three-fold over the past three years prior to the dilemma, and the company is running out of human resources to hire in the Denver area.…

A Make-or-Buy Decision at Baxter Manufacturing Company Scenario Summary Baxter Manufacturing Company (BMC) is a leader in deep-drawn stampings. It has been in business since 1978 as a privately held company. The process for making these stampings is very involved and complex. BMC developed methods for efficiently producing large volumes of stampings while keeping their quality very high. BMC uses state of the art machines to make the stampings and they make all the tooling necessary for those machines. In the years since their founding, many changes have impacted the industry – especially when it comes to computer networks and software. In the 1980s many of BMC's customers went to Just In Time manufacturing which affected BMC production schedules and inventory management. Automotive customers began asking for Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) capabilities around 1992. All of this has affected BMCs Information Technology department. Over the years, BMC has embraced the use of computers, computer technology, and software to enhance their competitive advantage and customer relationships. They have added CAD/CAM capabilities, a homegrown scheduling spreadsheet, and financial applications. A Commercial Off the Shelf (COTS) scheduling package was purchased in 1989 but the implementation was unsuccessful. Another COTS scheduling systems was purchased in 1991 but, again, the software did not match the needs of BMC. A new MIS manager, Don Collins, was hired in 1994 and he led an effort to develop a mini-computer based system to accept EDI orders from customers and allow customer service to create shipping schedules, as well as raw materials tracking, in process inventories, and finished goods inventories. These internally developed systems were so successful that the MIS department was flooded with requests for more systems. Don believes that it will take 2 years to internally develop the manufacturing software systems BMC needs to…

    4. If I could I would reduce the lead-time of the Cabinet to one week because this component takes the longest time to manufacture, making it the bottleneck of the entire process. Also the FOQ for the shelf should either be reduced or changed to L4L ordering styles. This is because a FOQ of 500 is much more than is ever required and by making shelves in batch of 500 it is wasting capacity that could be used more productively. Finally it would be ideal if CFC could order brackets in groups of 300. As question 1 demonstrated there are scenarios when ordering 300 would nto impact manufacturing and lower carring costs…

If I was one of the board members, I would have voted for the proposal opening a temporary plant for three years. The temporary facility should be able to supply enough outputs to meet current demand for three years until the state-of-the-art manufacturing facility is completed and is fully operated. Apparently the plant had a few shortcomings, though these flaws would contribute to higher costs and lower profits; the facility would be closed down when the new facility operated in three years. So the proposal would not do much harm to the company in the long-run, instead it would help resolving the supply shortage problem the company faced.…

Both cabinetry styles comes in various sizes offering a number of features however; the basic construction follows the same production and assembly. The focus will be on two types of cabinets; the Saturn which is utilized to house microwaves and the Gemini television stand. Both of these cabinet types require a part which is referred to as part 3079. In order to produce part 3079, a skilled machinist is required to program and stand watch on a special lathe.
