Thesis Statement For Yellow Fever
Thesis Statement: Yellow Fever is a potentially dangerous virus but by following the right steps it can be prevented and hopefully eliminated.

I. Overview of disease

A. Basic Information

1. Causes

a) Yellow Fever virus transferred by mosquitoes to humans

b) Since 1974 only one genetic type can still be identified

c) Transmitted between monkeys and mosquitoes and then from mosquitoes to humans.

2. Symptoms

a) Incubates in body for 3-6 days before symptoms occur

b) 2 disease phases

(1) "acute" (1st phase)- is characterized by fever, muscle pain, headache, shivers, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite.

(2) "toxic stage"- 15% of patients. This phase can lead to kidney failure and 20-50% will die. The rest will live with minor complications.

    Also known as Valley fever is an infection that is caused by the fungi Coccidioides. The fungus grows in soil found in the southwestern part of the United States as well as Mexico and Central/South America. Those living in these designated areas can contract this disease by inhaling the fungal spores in the air. This is considered a self limiting respiratory infection so most individuals that are infected present with mild to no symptoms at all. A patient with this disease can present with the following signs and symptoms anywhere from 1-3 weeks after breathing in the fungal spores due to its incubation period of 10-16 days. The symptoms consist of, fatigue, cough, SOB, fever, chills, HA, night sweats, muscle aches/joint pain, rash on the upper body or legs (erythema nodosum). These symptoms can last 7-30 days or up to several months depending on the severity. In regards to patient history, it is important to get a travel history especially if they went to an endemic area to determine their risk of exposure. Some exam findings could be respiratory manifestations such as rales, rhonchi, bronchial breath sounds, or decreased breath sounds. Skin findings could consist of diffuse, maculopapular rashes or urticaria that may progress to erythema nodosum or erythema multiforme after 3-21 days. Abscess formation can also be found on PE and unifocal bone or joint lesions if MS involvement. It can involve several organs such as the spleen, liver, lymph nodes, and the CNS can be involved resulting in meningitis.…

    The American Plague was written by Molly C. Crosby, who is as much as a researcher as she is an author. In 1648, a slave ship returning from Africa carried a few mosquitoes infected with a deadly virus know as yellow fever. The ship landed in the New World and thrived in the hot wet climate and on the white settlers. The New World has never come in contact with yellow fever and as a result no immunities have been built up. The virus obtained its name from the way it turns the victim’s skin and eyes a golden yellow. Victims also suffer from very high fevers, external and internal bleeding, and blackish vomit. In America yellow fever killed thousands of peoples, halted trade, and disrupted the government. Although many cities were affected by yellow fever, none were hindered more than the Tennessee city, Memphis. Before yellow fever made its way into Memphis, it was the largest city in Tennessee. When the virus hit thousands of citizens fled in a mass exodus and the 19,000 that stayed 16,000 and over a quarter of those died. The city revoked its own charter and was almost completely destroyed until a sewage system was established. Once The U.S. Government realized how devastating yellow fever was, they appointed a team of doctors and scientists to research and conquer the virus. The team went to Cuba where yellow fever was very common. Walter Reed was among this group and was the driving force to eradicating yellow fever. He and all but one of the team died of yellow fever but they yielded high results. Eventually a vaccine was created but it would cost too much to vaccinate everyone and at the time that wouldn’t have been possible to vaccine a huge number of people. Instead, great efforts were put into removing mosquitoes and their breeding grounds which would prove to be super effective.
