There is an estimated 6,800 languages spoken in the world today. Linguists say that about half of the languages are endangered, and that 90% will disappear by the end of this century (Rozovsky). With the possibility of extinction for a language, not only does the language die but the culture will also come to its demise, a perfect example of this situation is the Navajo language. Also known as Diné Bizaad, the Navajo language is a language in the Athabaskan branch with approximately 175,000 people in the United States (“Diné Bizaad …”). The Navajo Indians are located in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado, their language isn’t necessarily the most endangered, the language is only at risk of being severely endangered.…

Language is the heart and the foundation of each culture, which means that if someone does not know it, they will not be able to thoroughly acknowledge their culture. To exemplify this, long ago the Inupiaq were Americanized and forced to have an education where they could not speak their native dialect. To this day, their generation of language is gradually diminishing with each passing second, minute, and hour. Accordingly, the Inupiaq people want to be able to speak their rightful tongue, but they could not connect with others. Despite the fact that this affects new generations, an idea formed that without language, it indicates that their interactions among people, nature, animals, and the universe is conflicted over time.…

My investigative study will delve into the question of how these people have been dislocated and endangered, on the verge of extinction, without assimilation, and without their language ever being eliminated. While researching the Native American indigenous people and their borderland experiential relationships, once again, the MLA (Modern Language Association) website proved its value. The MLA Language Map is an interactive map, intended for use by students, teachers, and anyone interested in learning about the linguistic and cultural composition of the United States. The MLA website also has many other research tools including the Data Center for US Census information about numbers and ages of speakers of languages in a specific state, county, zip code, metropolitan area, town, or county subdivision or to view charts that illustrate the distribution by percentage of the languages in each state. One can also compare speakers of different languages by three age groups; 5–17, 18–64, and 65 and over, contrasting Americans who speak other languages by their ability to speak English. The MLA website is where I first became familiar with and interested in the Kickapoo tribe, particularly their Texas…

Throughout history the world has consisted of many cultures and languages, some of them have been dominant, some of them have been minor. Until the 20th century global and minority languages have continued a peaceful coexistence that has provided cultural diversity for the Earth. In the present this balance has been broken and most of indigenous languages tend to disappear. Although worldwide scientists do not spare efforts to stop this extinction, there is a debate whether it is sufficient to do for saving extinct languages or not. Some experts suggest that some positive trends have emerged in linguistic field which can alleviate the grave situation such as master-apprentices program and large-scale documental projects. However, many scientists assert that the measures are not enough to protect languages from losing, since the rate of this process is extremely high and negative attitudes towards local languages are intensive. Therefore, this essay will contend efforts that have been made to preserve languages are inadequate because of considerable amount of adverse aspects.…

How to Tame a Wild Tongue

Language is more than just a means of communication; it is part of one’s culture, identity, and self-expression. In the essay “How To Tame A Wild Tongue” written by Gloria Anzaldua expresses the dilemma she faced about her own language and how she represents herself through her language. Anzaldua who is a Chicano talks about how Chicanas have problems expressing their feelings, since they lack a native language. Instead it is a product of several languages, and their language Chicano Spanish has incorporated bits and pieces of several versions of spanish. Anzaldua speaks about people who are neither spanish nor live in a country in which spanish is the first language; for a people who live in a country in which English is the reigning tongue but who are not Anglo; for a people who cannot entirely identify with either standard Spanish or standard English. So she emphasizes the importance to have their own language. A language which they can connect their identity to , one capable of communicating the realities and values true to themselves.…
