COURSE SYLLABUS (Mixed Mode)

Subject Code : BCNG 501

Subject Title : THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK FOR NURSING PRACTICE

Credit Units : 3.0

Course Description This professional course deals with nursing theories, concepts, framework and models for nursing. It also includes a review of the development of the discipline of nursing, the origin, development and progress of nursing theories and their applicability to current practice. The history and phases of the nursing process are discussed in relation to the development of different nursing theories. A discussion of middle range nursing theories and some examples are added.

General Objective At the end of the course, the graduate student will have achieved an optimal level of knowledge and understanding of the theoretical bases of nursing practice as well as an appreciation of the roles and functions of theories.

    I would advise my colleague Mary about my experience with the nursing theory during my undergrad years and how it was very limited. The information learned then was given during the fundamentals of nursing class. We did not have a class dedicated to nursing theory. Taking NR501 Theoretical Basis for Advanced Nursing Practice will introduce advanced practice students to a more in-depth study. The theory class taken today will not only serve as a refresher, but also will go into depth about the theorist, how the theories are applied to the nursing practice and their contribution to the nursing profession.
