Theme Of Corruption In The Crucible
In the Crucible, John Proctor demonstrates that ambition will not corrupt even the most benevolent and reliant. John was ambitious to get his wife Elizabeth Proctor out of jail and for Abigail Williams to have justice for her crimes.
Abigail was responsible for multiple deaths in salem all because she wanted John and had to disguise one lie after another to succeed. She did not vanquish, and after every lie she told more innocent people were accused and hanged. It all started with Abigail and a group of girls dancing in the woods to conjure spirits to dispatch the people they wished. John tells Marry that at once she must tell the court the truth and quit deceiving everyone to think that his wife is a criminal. She tells the truth at first. John had almost won, the court was believing it. Abbigail was mad she got the other girls to start feinging that Marry sent out her spirit and was attacking them in the form of a yellow bird. She told the court that she saw John with the Devil and she made him “lie.” Now John was in a worse place than he was before, Except they found out Elizabeth was pregnant, so her hanging would be delayed a year. John confessed about his lechery, but Elizabeth did not know this, so she lied and said he didn’t. He confessed so that the court would know why Abigail would want to kill Elizabeth.
John was given the option to “confess” about being with the devil so he will not be hanged. He did. He signed the paper after his confession was recorded, but when Danforth says that this will be hung on the church door, he realized he could not. He says “I have three children- how will i teach them to walk in the world, and i sold my friends?” After more conversation, he rips up his confession, and chooses to hang instead of lying, and having a reputation of who he is not.
