The Yellow Wallpaper Analysis Essay
“The Yellow Wallpaper” “The Yellow Wallpaper” was one of the most fascinating short stories I ever read. It was like a mysterious horror story as I kept reading on. I can tell that Charlotte Perkins Gilman wanted to keep her readers intrigued and she did a great job at that. Although, throughout the story all I could think about is the woman in the wallpaper and what does she represent. In “The
Yellow Wallpaper” I believe that the woman in the wallpaper represents the narrator trying to break free from her nervous hysteria disorder and post-partum depression, but it only made her turn mad. I also believe that her husband kept her feeling ill by him treating her as a child. While reading through several reader responses I came

The narrator was so interested in getting that woman out of the wallpaper. I believe that this was her way of finally letting her illness to stop controlling her. She didn’t want anyone around her because it would have stopped her plan to escape the wallpaper or her mental disorder. I believe that Gillman wanted her readers to think the yellow wallpaper represents an illness because first of all, yellow is related to being sick. The next reason could be because the smell of the wallpaper, an illness could be a bad odor but it is not the worst smell ever. The narrator even talks about how the odor drags on all over the house and how it was even in her hair. So the only way to rid herself of her own nervous hysteria and post-partum depression she had to tear down the paper. This lets the woman escape.
She said “I suppose I shall have to get back behind the pattern when it comes night, and that is hard!” So instead of her having to go back she goes mad and even locks the door so no one can enter the room to put her back into her state of depression. When John entered the room and saw her, he fainted. I believe that he fainted because he finally saw the woman behind the pattern.

The short story 'The Yellow Wallpaper' is written in the perspective of the narrator as her journal where she reveals her deepest most personal thoughts about herself and her life, yet she still remains a very mysterious character. Her name is never revealed, and the reason the author does not reveal her name is so the story of her struggle could represent the struggles of many other going through the same situation. It is clear from the beginning of the story that she is an unreliable narrator because it is mentioned that her husband who is a doctor has diagnosed her with temporary nervous depression with slight hysterical tendencies. She seems to be a very creative and sensitive person who is a writer, but she is forbidden from writing in her journal by her husband who thinks that too much mental stimulation will only make her condition worse.…

On the surface, the narrator in The Yellow Wallpaper simply shows an insane woman who began suffering from depression after the birth of her child. The narrator was placed into a house, which was in the middle of nowhere, where she received dangerous treatment and often gets belittled by her husband, who is also her doctor. Her treatment required her not to do anything active, especially writing. Although some would conclude that the narrator of The Yellow Wallpaper is just about an insane woman struggling with post-partum depression and isolation, it shows the protagonists struggle with trying to break out of the mental constraints she has been placed under and her need for self-expression through her journal.…

She lost the battle with the fight to the depression at a physiological level and it reflected outwards. This caused an overall change to the whole story from the narrator's awareness of the situation to the delusional hallucinating and insomnia woman at the end of the story. Within a few days the symptoms start to appear and by the cure’s time-frame was up the madness has set in. “I've got out at last," said I, “in spite of you and Jane? And I've pulled off most of the paper, so you can't put me back! “Now why should that man have fainted? But he did, and right across my path by the wall, so that I had to creep over him every time!”(Stetson, 565). The way to go back to reality had been there for the narrator until this event happened; now it is disappeared…

Why does the mental health of the woman in The Yellow Wallpaper, written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, seem to deteriorate throughout the entirety of the short story? The woman does not seem to be very ill; but, as time progresses, it can be assumed that her state of mind is slowly worsening. While her husband, John, is a physician, it is mentioned multiple times by the woman, that he may have misdiagnosed the illness that she does seem to possess. The images the woman sees in the wallpaper represent how unstable her mental health is, the way in which the wallpaper mirrors the image of her life, and how her mental health slowly fades when isolated from society for a long period of time.…
