The Violin And Jing Mei Woo: Two Kinds
In the excerpts “The Violin” and “Jing Mei Woo:Two Kinds”, the authors demonstrate their maternal relationships between mother and child. In Amy Chua’s novel Battle Hymn of A Tiger Mom, she shows how she and her daughter have a very tense yet close relationship, while in Amy Tan’s novel The Joy Luck Club, she and her mother have a very strict and unloving relationship. Both mothers want more out of their daughters, but Tan's mother is much stricter and more intense about her commitment to the piano.
In Amy Chua’s excerpt “The Violin”, the tense relationship between Chua and her daughter Lulu is shown when Lulu asks her to stop thinking even though Chua hadn't said anything..Chua’s daughter sensed her mentally judging her performance and could tell that she was being judgemental. Chua's daughter can tell when she is tense by her posture and facial tells. As judgemental as Chua is of her playing, they still share a loving family bond, This is seen when Chua's daughter exclaims “Turn off your brain mommy”.(Chua 47-48) Even though she can sense her mother's tenseness, she still calls her mommy, indicating a loving relationship between the pair.
