The Vietnam War: A Short Story
“I’m still undecided. Give me a week or so to think about it,” I said, listening for the mockingbird. It must have felt safe because I heard only the wind in the trees and Leo’s voice pushing me to join him. “I don’t want to waste the summer thinking and talking.” “I just want to think clearly,” I responded. “That’s why I want you to come. We need a thinker to tell the story of our war.” “We wouldn’t get the same benefits our fathers did in Vietnam,” I said. “For example,” Leo asked? “For one thing, Bob Hope is dead, and we would be deprived of seeing Beyoncé in red, white, and blue panties like the ones Raquel Welch wore for the troops.” Leo gave a frown, and I was about to retell the story of my dad trading a week of leave to his …show more content…
To the east of our house, white shingled rooftops pointed to the foothills east of Poway. Our pine, plank fence stood behind our orange and grapefruit trees. Along the northern boundary, ivy grew over the fence. I thought that I should prune the ivy before I got a summer job. Cleaning up the backyard would please my mom. If I started pruning, I would have to prune the bottle bush, which grew next to the pineapple guava along the western fence. The kitchen of our blue ranch house stood east of our bottle bush. The patio was attached to the middle of the house and on the east side of the house was the window in Dad’s study. I lived my entire life in this house and leaving it for a foreign adventure made me uncomfortable. I thought about these ideas to keep myself from thinking about enlisting. I knew Leo would not drop the subject. Leo and I were best friends. Our fathers were best friends. Our mothers were best friends. We told each other that our families were one big happy family. Leo and I had many things in common. In high school, Leo made all conference as an outfielder. I was an honorable mention as a first baseman. Leo was an A student, and I was an A+

Another day, another run. Far from being dull, though, Senri saw it as yet another opportunity to push herself. So it was that she found herself out by Central Park turning the streets into her playground, her medical supplies strapped to her legs as usual. A good thing, too, because from the sound of that explosion, she was going to need them! Curiosity and concern both piqued, she made a beeline for its source, helped along by the smoke already trailing into the sky. Gathering the wind about herself, she kicked in a burst of speed, feet barely touching the ground. As an afterthought, she fumbled out the polarized ski goggles that served to conceal her identity, slipping them over her head with a wince as the already fastened straps pull at her hair. She tugs her hood up just in time to round a corner... and skid to a stop at the scene unfolding before her. "All this only a few blocks away. What are the odds...?" In…

“Let’s go, then”, King said as he hurried back to the house, escorted by his mother. The distance between the gym and the house was only a few hundred yards, as this place was a fairly cold, fresh, and dark rural area with minimal buildings and a large forest to the east of the buildings. Some say that the abundance of trees blocked the sunlight, some say it’s just dark and cold by nature. Pointless argument. With every step brought King and Theeva inches closer to the house, they arrived at a sophisticatedly designed two-story building with grey walls and a wooden door. That was the house.…

We all sat in the small, yet comfortable room together, exchanging stories and laughs. The meager building, only referred to as “the shack”, was pushed into the back corner of my mom's garden, among trees and brush. It had a corrugated, sheet metal roofing that was just starting to hint at its age after some years of weather. The walls had a softer appearance. They were made out of light, sweet-smelling wood that gave the shack its distinct, reminiscent aroma. On the exterior, the walls were painted vibrantly. Bright blue covered the walls that were vertically striped with yellow bars of wood that covered the cracks between the planks. The four square windows were colored a deep crimson, matching the large, windowed door, that covered the center of the front wall. Inside, it was equally as colorful. Multicolored cushions and beanbags lined the walls. There were two simple chairs of metal bars and stretched fabric. Salim and Kyle were sitting in the two chairs. Bernard and Daniel were seated in the bean bags against the back wall. I sat on the flat cushions on the ground.…

    (3) Before long the sun would top the Katayaghan hills, but as yet no people were around. In the grey shadow of the hills, the barrio was gradually awaking. Roosters crowed and strutted on the ground while hens hesitated on their perches among the branches of the camanchile trees. Stray goats nibbled· the weeds on the sides of the road, and the bull carabaos tugged restively against their stakes.…
