Tundra Biomes In the world there are about twelve biomes. The major biomes include deserts, forests, grasslands, tundra and several aquatic environments. A biome is large geographical area with special plants and animal groups and they are adapted to that type of environment. The Tundra biome is the coldest biome of the many biomes. It is separated into two types which are the arctic and alpine. The following information was gathered from a few websites which include Blue Planet Biome, National Geographic-Tundra, and UCMP.Berkely- The Tundra Biome. The Tundra biome is the coldest and harshest biomes in the world. The Tundra ecosystem is treeless and can be found in the arctic in the northern hemisphere an example would be the North Pole and

On the peaks of the highest mountains in Canada are glaciers which have snow that never melts. With snow covering the ground 24/7 there is now possible way vegetation can grow. It is just too cold and they can’t grow upwards with hundreds of pounds of snow on it. In the Tundra the case is almost the same. In the southern Tundra there is almost a glacier but most snow melts in late July-August but the only gives a one and a half month growing season which no big vegetation can grow. Only small shrubs and grasses. In the northern Tundra there is basically a permanent glacier except for maybe a couple of weeks of a growing season which in this case barely anything can…

The Tundra is an enormous biome. It covers about one fifth of the earth! That is a good part of the Earth. Greenland is a very good example of the tundra. It is located near the top of the world, near the north pole! The most distinctive characteristic of the tundra, is its permanent layer of permafrost, which means it has a thick layer of frozen soil throughout the year. The latitude of the tundra is 66.5625 degrees north, 0 degrees east. The tundra does not have many types of vegetation. It has shrubs, grass in some parts and a lot of mosses. The tundra is too cold to be able to grow a lot of vegetation. The animals that live in the tundra are the arctic foxes, musk ox, the snowy owl, lemmings, and the polar bear!…

Animals such as insects, bears and arctic foxes, have adapted to living in the tundra. For example, since food is scarce in the winter, bears have adapted their diets and will dig up roots or even eat seaweed found along water sides in order to avoid starvation. The arctic fox has also adapted to surviving the climate, such as having thick fur and a good supply of body fat to help keep it warm. The arctic fox also has a low surface area to volume ratio, which means less of its surface area is exposed to the arctic cold and less heat escapes the body.…

The natural vegetation regions and soil regions are interconnected in numerous ways. Soil regions as the Tundra soils, or dry climate soils have the potential to affect the type of vegetation that can be grown. Where you would find cold temperatures as the Tundra, you can expect limited vegetation to grasses, mosses, and shrubs. Because the ground has an active layer of permafrost, growing conditions are not suitable for plants and trees. Areas with moist soil as the wet-climate regions, you are expected to find trees and plants resembling the mixed forests, boreal and taiga forest, as well the deciduous forests. The Grasslands are located in the dry climate soils situated in the Prairie Provinces. Due to the dry temperatures there are very insufficient amount of trees, and consisting of large rolling terrains of grasses. To conclude location is a dependent factor on the type of vegetation a region will come to…
