The Truman Show Research Paper
‘The Truman Show’ is about Truman live at a ‘Seahaven Island’ - which is a giant television studio under a dome. However, he doesn’t know he is live in a fake world. In fact, he is a leading role of a TV show call ‘The Truman Show’. Fortunately, his college schoolmate had reveal the truth about his life. Finally, he found the whole truth and leave the ‘Seahaven Island’. The production team makes Truman afraid of the sea. This cause him cannot leave the Seahaven Island. However, he overcome the fear and helm the sailboat to leave the Seahaven Island finally. As a Chinese proverb call ‘water holds up the boat, water also sinks the boat’. I think sea is a two-edged sword for Truman. He trapped by the sea and his fear but the sea helps him get out too. On a macro-scale, Truman life is a show. In the Truman’s world, Christof (executive producer of ‘The Truman Show’) is like a god for Truman. However, this god is fake. Ostensibly, Christof had be control everything of Truman. Truman had never suspect the world until Sylvia (college schoolmate) tell him the truth. He just found out most of the thing are unreasonable (fig.3). These thing just similar to the real world, we can’t verify all of our knowledge are real and our ‘god’ is existence. I think this film is telling people try to trust yourself.     However this connection to Truman is very rarely to Truman as a person but more a product. Christof’s connection to Truman can be seen when he speaks to his creation and says “I am the creator of a television show…you’re the star”. This demonstrates the idea that Christof is proud of and loves Truman. Yet these reasons are completely wrong and that he only loves him as he will be able to generate views and revenue.     Peter Weir’s 1998 film entitled The Truman Show stops at nothing to depict just how much manipulation and traumatization can affect a human being. The motion picture presents Truman Burbank, a man who has been legally adopted by a television network and set up to live in a constructed set entitled Seahaven filled with fictional elements. In the opening sequence the main characters in Truman’s life are presented, giving thoughts about what the Truman show means to them. In the introduction, Truman’s wife in the show, his best friend Marlon and Christof the shows director are introduced. Weir uses visual manipulation to show the flow of power within the film. Christof is introduced in a close up shot, with him in centre to show that he has power within the film. Christof also speaks in a very direct tone, while Marlon and Truman’s wife are seen speaking in a very soft and welcoming tone, this is done to show that Christof has the power within the film and to reinforce his superior presence.     The way in which we view an object, situation or concept, greatly affects how we interpret its reality. This concept is explored by using Point of view to change the viewer’s ideas about the True reality of within the Truman show. The whole idea and notion of our reality is based upon what we see, what we grow up with. We learn from a young age what we see isn’t always the truth, and therefore we adapt our reality to what we already know. This is the same for Truman Burbank, a 33 year old average man.
