For example, in The Odyssey, beautiful women known as the Sirens sing alluring songs that draw men to their deaths. Odysseus’s crew escaped unscathed, but in O Brother Where Art Thou?, these beautiful women intoxicated the group, and turned Pete in for a reward. The screenwriters made the Sirens pretty close considering the massive setting change. Similarly, when Odysseus was sailing on his journey, he discovered and island full of people who ate lotus flowers. When some of his men ate the flowers, Odysseus discovered that eating the flowers made them lose track of time. So he rescued the men who had eaten the flower, packed up ship, and ordered “All Hands aboard; come, clear the beach and no one taste the Lotos, or you lose your hope of home.” (Homer 148) The movie’s version took the form of a church congregation where people could be “saved” by God. Pete and Delmar got baptized and “washed of their sins” and lost their desire to look for the treasure. One of the more different plot elements concerns the Cyclops. In The Odyssey, the Cyclops, Polyphemus, is a one eyed monster that Odysseus must use his wits to escape from. In O Brother Where Art Thou?, Polyphemus becomes a one eyed, traveling, bible salesmen named Daniel Teauge. Teauge lures Ulysses and Delmar out to a…

Just like there are differences there are also similarities that the book and movie do share. A similarity they both share in common is that Luke, son of Hermes, is the lightning thief. Another thing is that the Minotaur kidnaps Percy’s mother for Hades. Later they go to the Underworld. Not all books and movies are completely different, but in fact can have many similarities.…

Also, in the movie there is a scene where Antigone and the guard take an elevator and a car to get to a cave where she will be trapped in for burying Polynices. Since this book was written in about 442 B.C, Sophocles would not even know what and elevator or a car was let alone put the both in his book. Back in his day they would have walked to wherever they were going and definitely not to an elevator. Little details like that are what make the book and movie so different. Like the way they talk, dress, and the things that they have in their house is definitely more updated than what Sophocles had in mind.…

In 1965, African Americans were given the right to vote. The third and final big difference was Grendel. The poem said that Grendel was a son of Cain. He would attack when everyone was sleeping because people were telling the creation story. In the movie, Grendel was a son of Hrothgar. Grendel attacked during the party because of the praise people would give to Hrothgar. Hollywood did this because they wanted to make them three dimensional, good versus evil. The movie removed references to God and Christianity, so that it would be more favored by the bad guy, Unferth. Hollywood also wanted to make it more appealing to the changing audiences to make them interested in watching it.…

Whenever you read a book and then go watch the movie, most of the time they don’t follow the same events in the same order.
