The Summoner's Character Analysis
Following the Friar, we have the Summoner. He is described to be a grotesque fellow. On his face were sores that no ointment could fix. From his appearance we get hope that beneath his exterior there is someone who is kind. We eventually realize that is not the case when it comes to the Summoner. His job is to summon people to court for their crimes. Similar to Chaucer’s other characters he does not perform these duties. When summoning people to court, he happily lets them get away. As long as he receives payment in return “for a quart of wine he would allow a good fellow to have his concubine”(General Prologue, 651-652). With each bribe, it is always the Summoner that benefitted the most. He shows how easily deals can be made to get you out
