The Summer People Character Analysis
The genre of fantasy in many cases can lead to characters being thrown into a new world where new obligations are required like the transition into adult life. An example of this is evident throughout the entirety of “The Summer People” with a reoccurring theme of debt. Fran is enslaved by the summer people forever unless she can find a suitable replacement. The story reads, “Fran was straightening up her and her daddy's mess when the summer people let her know they needed a few things” (Link 26 ). With the help of fantasy characters such as the summer people, Fran is experiencing a part of life that is familiar to adults. In the duration of one's adult life, there are always new responsibilities and challenges that he/she encounters. Kelly

As the narrator, Gary Soto recreates a childhood experience in which he steals a pie from the German Market. Although stealing a single pie might seem insignificant, Gary Soto is able to emphasize the guilt possessed as a young six-year-old boy by using numerous rhetorical devices to recreate this unforgettable memory. Nichols and May’s skills as storytellers lie in their understanding of human relationships, a mastery that is expressed in the sketch through their delivery of character. The improvisational nature of Nichols and May’s dynamic is apparent in the conversational tone of this sketch. Nichols and May play off each other well and develop the relationship between the mother and son in a short amount of time. The dysfunction of this relationship drives the scene by creating conflict, which the characters exploit to the fullest extent. For instance, the mother in the sketch begins the call normally and proceeds to guilt trip her son with hyperbolized ¬¬reactions. May’s delivery emphasizes the nagging, worrisome traits of the character. The exaggeration of her character’s dysfunction is the focus of humor in the skit. However, once the sketch breaks down to reveal the emotional truth of the characters, the growing distance in the relationship between mother and son, a sense of gravitas hits the audience and asks us to consider our the…

In the direct, later on, indignant article “Endless Summer”, Rick Bragg reveals the transition from childhood to adulthood by using figurative language throughout the article. Bragg portrays that time last forever and summer is the same way. Summer feels so long to a child because they spend countless hours playing in the pool and staying out till dark. They wake up and repeat the same routine the following day. To Bragg, the transformation to an adult is very grim; because it means more responsibility. Jobs have priority and take up more time, leaving little to no free time to do the enjoyable things. Nevertheless, summertime as a kid is entertaining, but the memories will have to do because as adults, jobs take priorities in life.…

The short story "The Yellow Wallpaper," written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman, portrays the life of a nameless narrator who struggles to connect with reality. I have chosen the narrator to analyze because her character is continuously changing throughout the entire story and is very intriguing. In the beginning of the story she seems quite normal; loving of her husband and expressive of her ideas. But, as the story progresses the narrator begins to lose her sanity, she becomes obsessed with the yellow wallpaper on her bedroom walls, and gets "stuck" inside of it.…

The things that characters do, say, feel, and think, demonstrate to us what sort of individuals these characters are. As readers, we reach determinations, or make inductions, in light of the characters' activities and contemplations that permit us to associate certain qualities with every character. Character qualities are distinct descriptive words that let us know about the particular characteristics of every character. For the characters like the narrator in “The Yellow Wallpaper”(gutenberg.org) by Charlotte Perking Gilman, Jing-mei Woo in “Two Kinds” by Amy Tan, and Mr. Summers in “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, these characters tell us more about their personality and their role in the story. Character attributes can be physical (He…

It was a beautiful spring weekend in May, and I was warming up for a weekend volleyball tournament. During the first day of the tournament I suffered a season ending ankle injury. I was immediately transferred to the emergency room for x-rays on my ankle as they thought it might be broken. During my long recovery I experienced both physical and emotional pain. It took hope, strength, love and support from my family and friends to stay positive during my long recovery. Many people lose hope and get discouraged easily when life becomes hard, however, like Mariam and Laila, I did not give up. In Khaled Hosseini’s novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, Mariam and Laila experience physical and emotional pain. The women live in Kabul under the Taliban with no rights and little freedom. Additionally, they are married to an abusive husband named Rasheed. To endure a life with little freedom and stability requires hope, strength, and sacrifice through love and support.…
