Which container holds the most? Which container holds the least? o What will we use to measure the water? Why did you choose that? o What happened to the water when the fabric/sponge was added? Did the water level decrease? Why does this happen? Where did the water go? o What occurs differently when tin foil is added?

Questioning is important to build the child's understanding. By answering questions children get to hear the strength of their own knowledge (Crowe and Stanford, 2010).

Problem Solving:
Activity One: The children will engage with a variety of measuring utensils (spoons, buckets, cups, egg cups, measuring jugs, glasses, water bottles). They children will work in groups to answer the question 'What is the best utensil for measuring small quantities or water? large quantities of water?'

Activity Two: The children will engage with two containers of different sizes that hold an equal amount of water. The children will engage with the containers and be asked the question 'Which container holds more water?'. Children of this age will fall into Piaget's preoperational stage therefore this activity will be challenging. However I think it will challenge the children to think and develop thinking common to Piaget's concrete operational stage. At age five, the children should be in the preoperational stage. They should not reach the concrete operational stage until age

We see procedural fluency being addressed in these lessons when students are asked to know how to determine the distance between two numbers on a number line. Students use many different strategies, but they must describe their individual processes and also utilize a teacher provided strategy. For example, when counting, students must remember what numbers to verbalize next in the oral string of words.…

In my setting of 2-4 years we plan the activities around the child’s development stages but allow the children to use the activity in their own way. The children are not expected to use the activities in the same way and are encouraged to share there ideas with each other. Because of Piaget’s theories pre schools have a more hands on approach and plan activities by assessing the child’s needs.…

As humans we love to ask questions. Why is the sky blue? Why do people forget how to drive during the winter? As teachers, we are the same; however it is very important that teachers understand how to be able to ask the right questions to enhance learning and also use questions as a proper assessment tool. Questions need to be thoughtful, having a specific purpose, and be age appropriate. What I mean by age appropriate is that you do not want to ask a 1st grader to analyze why the main character of the book was sad rather you may ask if the main character is sad because her dog ran away.…

The last stage of Piaget’s cognitive development is known as the Formal Operational Stage, which occurs between the ages of eleven and sixteen. Adolescents have now gained the ability to think in an abstract matter, and can now understand things such as science and algebra. The most distinct difference between the Concrete Operational stage, and the Formal Operational stage, is known as inferential thinking. A child who needs to draw a picture or use objects is still in the Concrete Operational Stage, whereas a child who can reason an answer in their head in the Formal Operational stage. They can also formulate hypotheses and consider different possibilities. For example, a child who has progressed to this stage could now hypothesize what will happen to a plant in the absence of water.…

Redfield & Rousseau (1981, p. 238)), states that asking questions has shown to facilitate learning. Questions are a good thing they have a number of benefits for students. When one asks questions it brings about clarity in their head. If for instance, a student oro pupil does not fully understand a concept once they raise their hand and ask for clarificationa question it alerts the speaker to draw their attention to the particular subject matter that wasis confusing the learners. This would not have happened had the learner decided not to ask.…
