The Scarlet Ibis
The Scarlet Ibis
By: Jade N How would you feel if you were pushed beyond your limit? In this short story “The Scarlet Ibis.” Doodle is a character who is pushed beyond his limit by an unappreciative/selfish older brother. The three things I’ll summarize in this story are: Doodle being pushed too hard, the eldest brother secretly wanting to kill Doodle, and Lastly, How the brother tried to put Doodle in a special development program.

Doodle was pushed too hard by; his older brother would continue to say to him, “Doodle, do you want to learn to walk?”(page182) My opinion on ‘the brother is he is very selfish.’ He is ashamed to have Doodle as a brother because he can’t play or act like a normal boy/brother. He wants a brother he can play with. So that is why he takes Doodle to Old Woman Swamp to help he practice walking.

Doodle’s brother wanted to kill him because he said/thought Doodle Wasn’t “All There.”(page181) In the story it states what he wants to do. What he wants to do is smother Baby Doodle with a pillow. He didn’t do it because ‘he was grinned at from Doodle.’ So he ended up yelling to their mom “Mama, He’s All There! He’s All There!!”

Doodle’s brother prepared a development program for him. He says, “Of course Mama and Papa didn’t know about.” The program consisted on Doodle learning how to run, swim, climb a tree; fight. They got off on a good start, “Come on Doodle do you want to be different from everybody else from school?”(page184) The older brother would question. ‘So Doodle would continue on.’ I believe at this point Doodle is just as fragile, out of place and dead as the Scarlet Ibis he buried.

My conclusion is Doodle dies because he was pushed too hard. I think the brother feels guilty because if he would have never left Doodle he wouldn’t have died. Lesson be learned don’t be so pushy and selfish because it never helps only adds more burden. The Scarlet Ibis and Doodle where very similar and his brother can still see the

The narrator thought he needed to be fixed because he could perform tasks that other children could such as walking. It was not long until the Narrator became “embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn’t walk, so [he] set out to teach him”(160). Almost everyday the narrator would bring Doodle to Old Woman Swamp and try to teach him to walk, despite the fact that Doodle had no intent to do so. Not only did Doodle not want to learn, but he also continuously failed at it. However, the narrator refused to let Doodle be as he was and pushed Doodle even after he declared that “[He] just can’t do it...”(161). Even with Doodle giving up, both mentally and physically, the narrator refused to stop pushing him. He continued to force Doodle to the swamp everyday until he could walk like the other kids. However the narrator's greed for perfection didn’t stop there. After Doodle could walk the narrator wanted him to swim and run. He continued to force Doodle through strenuous activities until they caused his heart exploded. Leaving him dead under a bush. The narrator did this because he was embarrassed of Doodle and determined to make him like the other kids so his pride wouldn’t be…

This is shown when he clutches Doodle’s body in a sign of remorse. Where he had often left Doodle behind in the past, he hangs on to Doodle’s corpse and tries to shield it from the rain and the world. Since Brother changed his action, it is shown his feelings for Doodle changes from childness resentment to shame for his actions. The tone of guilt also shows in the afterthought in the story after Brother finishes telling an event, like when he reveals that he “[taught Doodle how to walk] for himself… and that Doodle walked only because [he] was ashamed of having a crippled brother” (182-184). Because he regrets treating Doodle the way he did, he laments about his past actions and paints an ashamed tone over the events. By showing the feeling changes of Brother, Hurst makes the story more…

My first piece of evidence is that Brother knew from the day Doodle was born that he wouldn't be able to do all the things a normal, healthy child would be able to do such as being able to walk and do other things for a long time without getting tired after a long time. When Doodle was born Brother stated that ¨I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow¨(Hurst pg.595) and saying how ¨He was a burden in many ways¨(Hurst pg.596) when Doodle was still very young. Doodles death wasn’t an accident, it was murder, and there are three specific pieces of evidence proving that this is a fact. In the story he says he abandoned doodle in the rain storm. “I ran leaving him far behind with a wall of rain dividing us” which caused doodles death. Ashamed of having a crippled brother. He says “they did not know that I did that for myself; the pride who’s slave I was. He is only helping doodle so he don’t look bad when he is with him. He helped doodle because of his pride. He insists” I should of admitted defeat but my pride wouldn’t let me”. He thinks he should have gave up nut he didn’t want to have a dumb brother. He ignored the struggle that doodle was going through.…

The symbolism between the Ibis and Doodle are very important during this story. The main thing that really protrudes about the symbolism between Doodle and the Ibis is that both Doodle and the Ibis are both very rare. The bird is from a faraway place and Doodle was just born as “special” to Aunt Nicey. The Ibis and Doodle die on the same day is also a major use of symbolism. How Doodle cares for the Ibis just because he is different just like him, he shows his caring through burying the Ibis when no one else seems to have solicitude for the Ibis after it dies. This is just like how no one seems to really care about Doodle. Doodle buries the Ibis because he wants to treat the Ibis just like how Doodle wants to be treated.…

The brother also didn't want to be burdened by his brother's disabilities he said: "When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn't walk, so I set but to teach him." He wanted to show Doodle the world that he sees the place that he lives that makes him so happy and that he feels that it is the prettiest place on the planet. Doodle doesn't get to see it all because he is not able to go swimming in the ponds and isn't able to run in the fields that his brother does on a daily basis. The brother sets out to teach him to walk and won't give up until Doodle is able to walk on his own without his go-cart. "I took him by the arms and stood up. He collapsed onto the grass like a half-empty flour sack. It was as if he had no bones in his little legs." In the end I think that the brother ended up learning more than Doodle did because he was given the gift of patience and in the end he still has to deal with the fact that he "killed" his…

Even though Brother saw Doodle as a crazy brother that you would see in your dreams he was mean to him by making him do things he didn't want to. Too much pride had ridden over Brother as he did his best to change Doodle into an ordinary boy for he was ashamed of him even if it meant he was cruel and harsh in the process. Another example is after Brother had finally taught Doodle to successfully walk on his own. The narrator says “They did not know that I did it for myself; that pride, whose slave I was, spoke to me louder than all their voices, and that Doodle walked only because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother”(3). What Brother had done for Doodle was great, but Brother had been mean to him in the process of teaching Doodle how to do anything like a normal boy. The narrator had too much pride for himself instead of his brother that everything he did was for himself simply because he was embarrassed. The short story “The Scarlet Ibis” written by James Hurst displays that too much pride has us treat our loved ones in a cruel…

The narrator showed that he didn’t care for Doodle when he left him out in the middle of a thunderstorm. One piece of evidence is, “The faster I walked, the faster he walked, so I began to run.” The narrator clearly ran off without his brother and didn’t turn around until the storm had calmed down. Doodle being crippled couldn’t run so he left him in the dust. That shows how he didn’t show any concern for his brother. Also right before Doodle had died he had said,”...don’t leave me! Don’t leave me!” The narrator heard him say that and instead of turning around and helping his brother get to shelter, he took off and left Doodle behind. He clearly heard his brother say don’t leave me but he left him and didn’t care. These two pieces of evidence show how the narrator of this short story didn’t feel concerned of his brother. Doodle was also exhausted when the storm…

The Scarlet Ibis Ever wondered about the way someone special to you can be taken from the world in a heartbeat? How everything would change in that moment? The story, “The Scarlet Ibis,” demonstrates the theme that you should never take anyone for granted. In this story, the symbolism and the characterization of Brother and Doodle strongly supports the theme of the story. They are both great contributors to the development of the theme of The Scarlet Ibis. To begin with, the purpose of this theme is to inform the audience that you should never take anyone for granted. No matter what they do or who they are to you, someday you might not have them anymore and you will feel very guilty. Just like Brother in The scarlet ibis. He treated Doodle very rough in the beginning. But towards the end of the story, his love for him grew. Although at the end of the story, Brother only saved himself from the storm, and not his brother Doodle. When the storm hit, Brother ran faster than Doodle could, because doodle had a disorder. Doodle was left behind screaming for help when the storm took him. By the time brother went back to him it was already too late. Guilt ran over brother.…

Doodle's brother wanted a brother for the sole purpose of his entertainment, and Doodle did not fit in his brother's mold. "It was bad enough having an invalid brother", says the brother, "but having one who possibly was not all there was unbearable, so I began to make plans to kill him..." (345). This statement by Doodle's brother shows his interest in having a brother is not that of love, not that of mental companionship, but a brother that he could use for personal entertainment. Doodle's brother wanted a brother who was just like him. A brother that could take care of himself and go on adventures with his brother, a brother like Doodle was not good enough for him, thus showing his level of insensitivity and selfishness. On page 346 Doodle's brother takes Doodle up to where his casket is and makes him touch it. Doodle's brother would only do this to reiterate his control on Doodle and Doodle's actions. This control which Doodle's brother wanted, gave him enjoyment; enjoyment to boss around his brother, enjoyment to boss a crippled kid. Doodle's brother has a mean streak in him, and from that mean streak he finds enjoyment, and throughout the whole story that streak continually comes up, and in the end, Doodle's…

As well as the narrator in ‘’The Scarlet Ibis” demonstrates sometimes decisions are based on a combination of love and embarrassment as was the case in his interactions with his brother. The other trait the older brother represents is being shameful. He was ashamed of having a crippled brother, so he taught Doodle how to walk, not for Doodle's own convenience, but for himself.
