The Year of Billy Miller is a prized book because it is a realistic story. Instead of relying on traditional stereotypes to tell Billy’s story, Kevin Henkes created a text that represents a variety of children. Billy’s dad stayed at home to take care of his younger siblings while his mom worked at a high school. Also, Billy faced struggles such as not wanting to be seen with his parents because they baby him. These are issues that most children face, and by including them in this text, Kevin Henkes created book that all children can relate to.…

Joe Wilson is shy, awkward and decidedly single. He and a friend take a job for a local man, Black, and a young girl Mary lives there who Joe is introduced and attracted to. The story starts by looking at the right of passage between boyhood to manhood. The narrative voice outlines that the pleasures of being a boy include: enjoying skinny dipping in a creek with mates, when his father buys him a gun, when he gets a saddle and bridle, when he has his arm in a splint or a stitch in his head. We are then told that the speaker is not the 'average boy' and was 'born for a poet instead.' This would explain the displacement and confliction that is felt by the narrator concerning his role as a man.…

Joseph’s day on the island could be described as an odyssey through hell. The island is hot, wet, and sticky and everywhere Joseph goes seems to be dark, grey and filled with despair. The island has turned into a hellhole where crime has become common, “not a week went by without a robbery in the area.” Also, dogs lying dead in the street have become a “common sight.” The other characters in the story are both snobbish and sneering like his wife and her friends or they are drained of life like his old friend Frankie, “It was the voice of a depleted man.” By the end of the story Joseph has two choices: stay on the island that has become his own personal hell or leave the island where he might be able to regain some happiness. By the end of the story the reader has no choice but to believe that a man in Joseph’s position would make the decision to leave.…
