A profession is defined as a type of job that requires special education, training, or skill. (Merriam-Webster, 2015) Professionals require many years of training, study and practice before they are able to embody the role that their profession demands. “The Army is an American Profession of Arms, a vocation comprised of experts certified in the ethical application of land combat power, serving the civilian authority, entrusted to defend the Constitution and the rights and interest of the American people”. ( Tradoc, 2010 ) The expert role of the Human Resources Sergeant within the Profession of Arms is vital to the function and success of the overall Army. To understand the importance of the role of Human Resources Sergeants within the Profession of Arms, we must first understand what a Human Resources Sergeant is and what they do to support the Army’s mission. …show more content…
Human Resources Sergeants have an array of responsibilities that range from supporting the development in Soldiers and their careers, to planning, coordinating and executing a plethora of tasks and financial actions and administrative duties that are essential to maintaining the flow of missions throughout all levels of the Army. Human Resources professionals are often the direct link between Commanders and their Soldiers. They coordinate timely and effective manpower and personnel support for Commanders at all echelons.     Wagoner, OK - On August 21st 2016, Sergeant Cody Standifird was patrolling the area of Coal Creek south of Wagoner when he observed a, Maroon Toyota Sports Utility Vehicle parked in the grass near the river bank. As Sergeant Standifird circled the parking lot area he observed the back hatch of the vehicle was open and a person lying inside. Sergeant Standifird approached the vehicle and discovered a male occupant was laying on his back with blood coving his face and head, and involuntary gasping for air. Sergeant Standifird recognized the subject was in medical distress and rolled him to his side to clear the blood from his airway. Sergeant Standifird also requested an ambulance be dispatched. While waiting for EMS the subject, subsequently identified as, Robert Lewis Potter stopped breathing. Sergeant Standifird moved Potter onto the ground and began C.P.R. While performing chest compressions a large amount of blood protruded from Potters mouth and he began breathing on his own. Sergeant Standifird, again rolled Potter to his side to clear fluids from his mouth and Potter stopped breathing again. Sergeant Standifird, again began CPR and after a short time Potter began to breathe on his own. EMS arrived on scene and transported Potter to Estar hospital in Muskogee where he is currently listed in stable condition.…

    As the Army transitions from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan, the organization is well served to take a long look in the mirror. After ten plus years of deployments, our combat tested warriors are sure to possess more than enough valuable knowledge to reinforce and improve upon our status as a profession. A TRADOC published paper explains “to be a professional is to understand, embrace, and competently practice the expertise of the profession.” I believe the profession of arms exists and there are many components that reinforce this argument. Among these components, initial entry training and institutional learning, shared values, and a monopoly on our mission are three of the most important tenants. All Soldiers must graduate from Basic Combat Training and all officers must graduate from a commissioning source. Similar to medical school or law school in other traditional professions, these schools set the foundation for years of practice that will lead to expert work. From the first day in these schools, Soldiers are taught the seven Army values and the Soldiers creed. Comparable to the Hippocratic Oath, these words set basic principles all Soldiers must live by. Last, no other organization has the knowledge, material, or will to ensure national defense and security.
