The Role Of Slave Owners In Uncle Tom's Cabin
In Uncle Tom’s Cabin, there were three main slave owners: Mr. Shelby, St. Clare and Legree.

Mr. Shelby, the first master of Uncle Tom, was generally kind and treated his slaves well. To Mr. Shelby, if the situation of him was not that urgent since he was involved in economic crisis, he would not sell any of his slaves. When Haley, the slave trader, came and discussed with him about the slaves who were being sold, Mr. Shelby did not show a friendly attitude to Haley. Even when they finally came to an agreement, Mr. Shelby still insisted that Haley should find a good master for Tom. However, Mr. Shelby was a specific character of Southern plantation owners. He believed that slaves were commodities. He was generally used to slavery.
