Under the Franco regime, Spain suffered international isolation, however in many terms. In 1955 the country was accepted as a member of the United Nations, and in 1970 General Franco named prince Juan Carlos his successor as the future king of Spain, thereby reestablishing the monarchy. Upon the dictator’s death in 1975 King Juan Carlos the first was crowned and the country set out on the long journey back to full democracy in Spain.…
Within fifty years of Christopher Columbus discovering the New World, the Spanish empire had gained almost complete control of Central America and the majority of South America. Furthermore, the Spanish controlled large portions of southern Europe, including much of Italy, Austria, and the Netherlands. The success of the Spanish empire began its gradual decline in the seventeenth century. Many factors contributed to the ultimate demise of the Spanish empire, but the main cause of the fall of the empire was Spain’s poor economic decisions. The Spanish government delegitimized their currency, overextended their empire, and created an army that they could not financially maintain all within the seventeenth century. Additionally, they continued to get involved in…
Shortly after 1492 when Christopher Columbus sailed the ocean blue, death ravaged the great empires and civilizations that the Aztecs and Incas built. Women, children, and the rich culture suffered at the hands of the Spaniards. Despite all of the destruction, it lead to what many call today, Latin America. However, not just one event created Latin America, it was a large collection of many. After the Crusades, monarchs realized that the key to maintaining power was to gain the support of the nobility and become independent of the nobles. Leaders of New Monarchs changes how they ruled and how they saw themselves as rulers. They cared for the aspirations of the people and represented their country. Louis XI of France and Henry VII of England were two examples of New Monarchs who centralized government and contributed to the rise of their countries from the period of 1450-1550.…

mperialism's impact on Latin America: Today, Latin America has a very negative view on imperialism and still blames the US for their economic problems. Latin America is currently protesting for a presidential recall vote because their current president, President Nicholás Maduro, has not been a good leader and has been bringing many problems to his country. There is a food shortage which caused all the prices for food to soar, and hospitals are in bad conditions making it unsafe for patients. All of these things happened in the past as an effect of imperialism and is continuing to go on in Latin America…
The Iberian powers were able to establish and maintain colonial empires in the Americas for so long based on luck. There was no way to foresee the outcome of each conquest. There were a few times that the battles could have gone either way. It is commonly argued that the Iberians were able to colonize easily because they were “civilized men” while the natives were “barbarians”. (Restall 132) The real culprits were military prowess, strategic thinking, Iberian disease, and lack of a unified community.…
The caudillo system came to be a common form of government in Latin America for several reasons. The first, and most apparent, reason for the establishment of the caudillo system, was the weak, precarious, and unstable governments left in place after independence was achieved. These countries, once colonies, had been under the rule of Spain, which meant that all government control came from an outside source that was imposed upon the inhabitants. Local armies, the only organized group prepared to take control, assumed power once the Spaniards were defeated. The transition from a military government to a government controlled by a "hero" from the army, the caudillo, was both logical and easy.…

The revolutions that took place in the United States, France, Haiti, and Latin America were all influenced by one another. The main political idea was that of popular sovereignty. This was the idea that the authority to govern comes from the people. This strayed from the ideals that the right to govern comes from God or tradition. The main group that benefited from these revolutions was middle class white males; except in Haiti. Long term, the revolutions gave many groups the ammunition needed to fight for political rights they previously did not have.…
The documentary Haiti and the Dominican Republic: An Island Divided discusses differences between two countries that share one land mass. In the first few seconds of the film the only visible separation or distinction viewers can observe is the Massacre River and the two different sides the countries occupy. However, moments later viewers are informed of the many deeper-rooted differences between the two countries and its people. Haiti and the Dominicans have had many conflicts over the years and this documentary helped give me a better understanding of the reasons and history from which these conflicts were born.…

More attention needs to be on the part that Monarchies have played regarding the evolution of Canadian democracy. Many Canadians tend to forget the importance of the Crown, though they are not to blame as it is a subject hardly heard of or spoken about in school curricula and media outlets. For five centuries, the Crown has been a symbol of strength in Canada. With an extremely stable and responsible government, the Crown’s involvement is disregarded and forgotten. According to many polls, majority of the Canadians who are aware of the Canadian Monarchy wish to abolish it completely and would rather have a head of state from within Canada but, “Monarchy advocates argue for its continued relevance in parliamentary function and as a symbol of…
