Would you let someone force you into making a life-changing decision? In the book The Witch of Blackbird Pond, Kit was an immigrant girl who had recently traveled to America of her own choice to live with unknown relatives. Suddenly, amidst the trials and troubles, she was courted by a quiet young man named William who barely talked about anything but his house. Her relatives loved him, but she, however, had no feelings for him. One day at her uncle’s house, She was asked to marry him. Conflicted, she stood on the porch with a gargantuan choice to make. What should her decision have been?

    By, Elizabeth George Speare. The book took place in the year of 1687. Some of the book takes place on a boat called the "Dolphin," and then the rest of the book in Wethersfield, in the state of Connecticut. The main characters in the book are Katherine Tyler (her nickname was Kit), Nat Eaton, Uncle Matthew, Aunt Rachel, Hannah Tupper, Kit's cousins Mercy, and Judith, Prudence, Hannah Tupper, John Holbrook, Goodwife Cruff and Goodman Cruff. One of the problems in the beginning of the book is when she goes to her cousin's house and was adapting to their way of life; for instance when she got there, they all did not have good clothes and she had really fancy clothes that they would have never worn in their life because they were too expensive. Another problem that she encountered was that she met a lady named Hannah Tupper that lived near Blackbird Pond and she was a Quaker. That's why she was forced to live there, because no one liked her and she was also accused of being a witch. Kit made friends with her when she bumped into her in the meadow. These people were put on trial and given the choice to plead guilty or they die trying to prove their innocence. These trials were the Salem Witch Trials. Convicting those innocent citizens can be viewed as killing a mockingbird; mockingbirds are innocent and they don’t harm anyone. This is exactly what Harper Lee showed in the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Harper Lee uses characters that have had innocence stripped from them and indirectly compares them to a mockingbird.     Compassion is important in every walk of life. The definition of compassion is : a virtue of empathy for the suffering of others and a desire to alleviate that suffering. Compassion is important because it makes up who you are and is a strong part of human love. Without compassion, no human could ever get close to each other or function together as a society. Without compassion, people would not be able work together because they would not care about anyone else's pain. There would be no working together towards a common goal, that is one of the key pillars of society. Compassion is reason we have doctors and nurses. Compassion is reason that when we see someone hurt, on the ground, we help them up. In the novel, THE WITCH OF BLACKBIRD POND, Kit and Nat show compassion for Hannah Tupper when her house burns down. She is their friend and they are sympathetic for her and do anything to help her. They even go into the building to retrieve her cats. They are feeling compassion for her and will help to alleviate her suffering, risking the possible legal repercussions of aiding a witch. Another instance in the novel in which the characters show compassion is when Kit teaches Prudence to read and when she defends Prudence from her mother by lying at the trial. The first time was compassion because kit saw prudence had low self worth because her mother has lead her to believe that she is stupid and never will be able to read. Kit sees her suffering and decides to alleviate her suffering, risking Goodwife Cruff's wrath by teaching her to read and write. Later in the book, once kit is accused of practicing witch craft and the townspeople present the evidence of the hornbook with Prudence's name written in it repeatedly, Kit lies for Prudence's sake. She doesn't want Prudence to get beaten by her mother. She risks possible death in compassion for Prudence's situation. Finally, prudence shows compassion to Kit.
