Reunion by Carolyn Forche

On the phonograph, the voice of a woman already dead for three decades, singing of a man who could make her do anything.
-The persona is listening to something that she can relate to.
-She is listening to something that makes her remember something (a man/a broken relationship) from the past.
On the table, two fragile glasses of black wine, a bottle wrapped in its towel.
-These three lines refers to an act of sexual intercourse.
-The two fragile glasses could be a metaphor for bodies.
-Black wines do not exist. The word “black” could connote something negative. It could mean that something is corrupted. Since the wine is inside the glasses, this could mean that the act itself is corrupted.
-Also, the line, “a bottle wrapped in its towel” further proves that a sexual intercourse is going on.The towel could be a metaphor for blanket, and the bottle refers to the man and woman. They are now made one because of the act. The way the man and the woman wrap themselves in the blanket is similar to the way the bottle is wrapped in its towel.
It is that room, the one we took in every city, it is as I remember: the bed, a block of moonlight and pillows.
-The woman is reminiscing on important details where she and the man did it. Based from the lines, she can remember these details very well. She remembers the room, the bed they laid on, how the moon looked and the pillows they used. This moment was very significant to the woman.
My fingernails, pecks of light on your thighs.
-These two lines could refer to how the woman was trying to get the guy to do it again, the next day after the act.

The stink of the fire escape.
The wet butts of cigarettes you crushed one after another.
-The line “you crushed one after another” alludes to the fact that they had intercourse (repeatedly) and in the end, this act made the woman really tired. They did it numerous times. That is why the two lines “the stink of the fire escape” and

While sappy and slow hits are the usual characteristics of a Carrie Underwood song, she changes her style with a more optimistic tune. It opens with an upbeat rhythm on the keyboard. Then, a bluesy beat is introduced with the sounds of a guitar, violin, and drum set. The tune fades lower to stress the importance of the lyrics when she begins to sing. She uses variations of medium and low pitches to show off her perfect country vocals. She begins with a low and sassy voice, but shifts to a more medium tone at times. While she starts the chorus, the music gets louder and an arrogant attitude is heard through her voice. The music is also very joyful because she resolves the situation in her own terms. This angry, yet cheerful, melody is very different from what Underwood's fans are used to hearing.…

While straying from convention, Taylor often uses humor to highlight important societal problems while still entertaining the audience. For instance, when Dale and Michelle bring wine and says, “More wine. Geez and they call us alcoholics.” Dale replies with, “You’ll find it quite exquisite” (Taylor 25). This humorous exchange underlines the issue of aboriginal peoples are stereotyped as alcoholics while still having a light hearted tone. Taylor does this throughout the play to bring to light touchy subjects without harping on the problem. In turn, the audience does not feel guilty for these issues but can still think about them and even have fun with it. In addition, the wine’s effects move the plot with Michelle’s humous drunk rhymes and the aggression that comes along with alcohol. Before the night is over, there are multiple fights that intensify after more drinking is done. Furthermore, wine symbolizes alcoholism and a way to suppress or hide from issue. In turn this develops characters like Michelle who embodies these traits. Lastly, since wine is a popular and common gift for a dinner party, the audience is led to believe this will be a normal night. However, the irony is the dinner party is anything but ordinary. As a result, wine adds to the play’s eventful night, to the audience's laughter and to the overall…

The story opens with its first apparent imagery of the couple ordering beer while waiting for the train. As the man and woman begin their dialogue, the woman makes remarks about the distant hills which the train station is situated between. As they continue talking it becomes known that the woman is pregnant, and the man wants her to have an abortion. “What should we drink?” the girl asks. She has taken off her hat and put it on the table.” It’s pretty hot ,” the man say. “ Let’s drink beer”.………..”I wanted to try this new drink. That’s all we do, isn’t it- look at things and try new drinks.” the woman comments. The drinking of the beer represents the couple’s unusual recreational routine of hanging out together and not really having a serious relationship. This clearly shows that the girl is tired of doing the same thing and wants a chance of looking forward to something new, and her dissatisfaction with the relationship as a whole. Her intention at the present time is to raise this baby and have a family with him.…

II. Analyzing: In this poem Olds does a great job painting a visual picture in the readers mind. “We are also in our/bed, fitted naked closely/ along each other¸half passed out/ after love, drifting back and/ forth across the border of consciousness, our/ bodies buoyant, clasped.” These lines allow the reader to see how much the couple love each other, and the enjoyment they have together. The imagery in these lines is so amazingly written and described.…

The “Reunion” is the shortest yet most powerful reading by far. In my own opinion, the biggest thing we as humans waste is sweet, sweet time. It is taken way too much for granted, and it seems that we only appreciate it when we’ve realized we’ve run out of it. The people you take for granted today may turn out to be the only ones you need tomorrow. As spoken in the lyrics of the Maccabees, “let’s make time work for us”, “because time can mean so much” (Maccabees).…

When the narrator states: “I pulled and she shook, I shook and she pulled” (Gilman 517), this goes to demonstrate that the woman in the wall that she’s been trying to free is really herself. The woman trapped in the wallpaper is a significant metaphor to represent that the narrator is trapped in an oppressive society, and more specifically marriage, where she is wrongfully confined to isolation as a “cure” to her madness. Furthermore, the narrator intends to tie up the woman in the wallpaper if she tries to get away, but ends up “securely fastened now by [her] well-hidden rope” (Gilman 518). She is indeed the woman that she is so desperately trying to save.…
