The Reforms Of Spain During The Spanish Civil War
Spanish Civil War
The Spanish Civil War took place in Spain between the years of 1936 to 1939. One side was the Republic who had government control over the country. The opposition was the Nationalists who wanted to overthrow Republic including its leader, Manuel Azuna. The Republic made up of urban workers, farmers, and the educated middle class with the help of the Soviet Union and the International Brigade. Others chose to follow the Nationalist leader, Francisco Franco. The people’s motivation for siding with the Nationalists was due to their identity, the belief that the Republic was not taking care of Spain, and help of two thirds of the Axis Powers, Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. All believed that the Republic was not taking of care Spain in the correct manner. In 1931, King Alfonso the XIII held a public election. The voters chose a liberal government instead of a monarchy. King Alfonso was exiled, and the Second republic made up of liberals and socialists was put in charge. They made drastic changes. The Republic thought that there were to many officers in the military. Their solution was to force the retirement of thousands of officers. Also, these men would only be given half pay ("The Spanish Civil War").
Francisco Franco, the main military general, came out against the Republic. He promised a return to conservative law. He also used propaganda to convince the people that they were not only fighting for their rights but for a holy war. He stated, “we are faced with a war that is taking on each day the character of a Crusade ("Spanish Civil War Religion"). Franco was able to lead the people into a Nationalist rebellion and eventually became a leader Spain.
As both sides of the Spanish Civil War felt that they were too weak to win, they called for aid. The Soviet Union, also know as Russia sided with Republicans. One reason they joined is because the Republicans supported their Atheist campaign. The Soviet Union wanted to end the power of the The Roman Catholic Church in all of Europe. Another reason why the Russians gave aid because the of the spread of communism. A Communist Spain would give Joseph Stalin, Russian dictator for over 50 years, more power in the word.
