The Raven Monologue
It was a dark, cold, and rainy night as I struggled with the pain of losing my love. I was nearly asleep when suddenly I heard a knocking at my bedroom door. “Only a visitor,” I mumbled. I suddenly remembered that it was a dark and depressing December, so I sat by a fire that was slowly dying. My writings did not ease my pain.
I didn’t know what the sad rustling of my colorful curtains were. It excited me with amazing horrors I’ve never felt before. Someone was at my bedroom door. Then later another visitor came to my door. That was it and nothing more. Right then my soul grew stronger, and I couldn’t wait any longer. I would appreciate your forgiveness. Once again I heard a light knocking. I opened the door and there was nothing. I started dreaming things I had never dreamed before. I heard a voice say, “Lenore”. I said it back and all I heard was an echo. Then I heard a knocking louder than before. It was at my window. It was still nothing, but my heart stopped. I opened the windows and a bird flew off but there sat a good mannered Raven of yore for many days. The bird perched on a Greek god of war above my bedroom door. I heard a plain conversation with no meaning. The Raven sat lonely on the sculpture and his soul outpoured as he said nothing else. I was scared when things started moving by reply, so

Snow started to shower as if on a peaceful rainy night and I look for any opening, trying to escape this creature that was following me. I could make out a large building figure ahead and ran directly to it, exhorting my energy as I advanced through the shivers in my body and aching bloodstained legs. An old tainted church-like mansion appeared as the fog cleared and I forced my way up the frigid sleet hill and onto a rusty pavement beside the building. I leaned upon the 5-metre tall wooden door trying to hear any sound coming from inside the outsized building, trying to sense any civilisation as the sky slowly turned into a rich black shade. I knocked onto the polished door, trying to depict a reaction from the owner that might've lived in this secluded place. Lights started to rapidly appear above the door and forming a luminous loop around the entire mansion, whilst the door blew open with such force that I was knocked back onto my spine. I tried to scamper away on my knees as a spine-chilling sensation started to form from what was a supernatural…

Losing someone dear is similar to the trek of a rugged mountain journey. These hills are similar to William Cullen Bryant's poem thanatopsis where he said “The hills Rock-ribbed and ancient as the sun the vales /stretching in pensive quietness between”(20). Initially, the journey feels incredible, each step of the hike coated with the weight of grief. Yet, with time, the peaks and valleys of memory become comforting footholds, offering help amidst the feeling of loss. Just as mountains stand against the passage of time, so too does the memory of those we've lost, sculpted into the landscape of our hearts.…

Everyday, someone experiences the loss of a family member or friend. This loss impacts everyone differently. All of us have or will experience the loss of someone close. Some individuals experience intense grief, whereas others are able to move on easily. The poem “English” by Yusef Komunyakaa explores the perspective of a boy who befriends a girl who is later shot to death by soldiers. “English” explores events that occur before the girl’s death. The poem “While I Slept” by Robert Francis explores the narrator’s experience of loss. “English” shares the story of someone living in the time of the Nazis whereas “While I Slept” has no specified time. This makes me think of how humanity is connected through the fact that the loss of someone close…

In Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Raven,” the narrating character is obsessed about his past love that he is “weak and weary” (Poe 1). “From my books surcease of sorrow – sorrow for the lost Lenore.” (10) He cannot accept that she is gone, his “rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore.” (11) When the narrator hears a tapping at his chamber door, he believes at first it is Lenore. He feels a thrill and opens the door to emptiness. “And the only word there spoken was the whispered word, ‘Lenore?’ / This I whispered, and an echo murmured back the word, ‘Lenore!’ / Merely this and nothing more.” (28-30)…

The raven has some very strange movements in the poem “The Raven”. It shows up on the chamber of the door out of nowhere. The raven just shows up randomly and quotes his saying “Nevermore” to the person because he lost his loved one. The odd person was chatting with a random bird that was not even there in the first place just to get answers…

Poe utilizes the raven as a means of placing a dark tone on his poem when the narrator asks if “[he] shall clasp a sainted maiden whom the angels name Lenore-/ Clasp a rare and radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore” (94-95). The raven responds with “‘Nevermore’” (96). The widower questions the raven if he will ever get the chance to hold his wife again, and the raven replies that he will not, showing Poe’s tone of despair and misery. On the other hand, Poe creates a hopeful tone in “Annabel Lee” when, at the end of the poem, the narrator says, “And neither the angels in Heaven above/ Nor the demons down under the sea/ Can ever dissever my soul from the soul/ Of the beautiful Annabel Lee” (30-33). Declaring that even death cannot tear him and his love apart, the narrator believes that their souls will forever be together, no matter if she is in Heaven or Hell. This is much unlike “The Raven” in which the widower learns that he will never see his wife again. Poe’s tone in “Annabel Lee” provides a more peaceful atmosphere regarding the death of a loved one than that of “The Raven”. Both poems illustrate the ambiguities and uncertainties that that surround the death of a loved one and offer reactions to such…

Well the Raven was answering the question but, not in the way he wanted. He wanted to hear about one thing and that one thing was Lenore. He wanted to hear good stuffs from them person that he loved the most, in this case its Lenore. But he raven kept saying the word “Nevermore” to every question he asked. As we can see the writer uses “if bird or devil” in the first example and then in the second example he uses “bird or fiend!” . Well in the first example the phrase “Bird or Devil” he is asking himself if the raven is a real stupid bird or a devil because he is not answering any of his question. The raven is only saying one word over and, over…

I sat in my room for a long while weeping before I heard a familiar noise outside. I rushed to the door peering out just before I saw that same angry girl jumping into my flower bed destroying my flowers. I felt that all the happiness I had ever had was being sucked out of me with every stomp that girl was taking on my marigolds. By the time I got to my flowers they were all gone. I couldn't even find it in me to yell at her stood there in astonishment and a wave of sadness washed over me. It was almost as if my whole life was taken away from me from this careless little girl who was only thinking of herself. I wanted to scream I but I just couldnt. I felt tears forming in my eyes, I forgot the girl was there before I heard her scarce and quivered voice, “M-miss Lottie!” she had said before she hurried to her feet. Her eyes were swollen as she looked up into my sad and weary eyes. I stood there for a moment before I turned away and went inside to my room. I thought to myself, this is a dream I will wake up in a little bit and my flowers will be there when I wake up, but in the back of my mind I knew they were…

A grieving man sits and hears a knocking on his door, what could it be? Out of all the possibilities it's a raven. I believe that the raven in Edgar Allan Poe’s poem is imaginary for many reasons. However, the main reasons are; the behavior of the raven, the talking, and the man’s sorrow of his wife Lenore which symbolizes the raven. First, I will talk about why the bird’s behavior is a sign that the bird is imaginary.…

Stranded in the rusted corners of a train yard bruised and bleeding, or sinking to the bottom of a dam with every morsel of her beauty seeping from her skin? The cruel, cruel night had stolen away my daughter, ripped her out of my loving embrace, taking from me the light in my heart. I had never felt such loneliness since - There was a knock at the door followed by many more. I toppled from my seat, then proceeded to storm down the hallway. My heart ran at such a pace that beads of sweat began to trickle down my neck.…

Today is one of those rare days in which it is raining and I’m sitting on the windowsill waiting for a sign. Something that says ‘move on’. There is still a part of me that hopes every day that you're alive and I haven't found you yet. I will have searched the far corners of the earth before I let myself believe you dead. I dream of you every night, then wake with the bitter taste of regret fresh in my mouth. You abandoned me. You have marooned me on this earth, and it is dark without your light by my side. All that fills my mind is when you were still beside me. I distinctly recall one summer when we were not quite children anymore and still too young to be adults. It was raining so hard that the streets were flooded for the first time in eighty years, and you had insisted on escaping to the desert.…

I could hear the footsteps running up behind me and I crooked my head that way; it was my father, he was covered in blood holding a knife in one hand and a needle in the other. Tears wouldn't stop pouring out of my bloodshot eyes, I tried screaming, but nothing wasn't coming out, I tried getting on my feet as I stumbled my way down the stairs and out the door into the frosty air, which by then felt refreshing. I stopped outside the front door trying to process everything that was happening at that time, my breath was leaving my mouth in clouds into the stale air, I then felt a sharp sting in my neck, and dropped to the hard grass. Looking directly over me into my eyes was my…
