The Pros And Cons Of Abolishing The Death Penalty

The death penalty is amongst one of the most notorious of punishments heard of, but it is also one of the most controversial and ethically questionable forms of punishment. Its severity also brings to question the number of inmates whom were falsely accused and died an unjust death. Falsely accused victims on death row are leading 4.1% in turn of the staggering exonerated at 1.1%. However there are currently no known methods to apply to the death penalty as its inhumane nature doesn’t leave much room for reparation. The number of African-American inmates executed is quite high in comparison to the total population in America, but eliminating racism in law enforcement and the court of law has been the goal for quite a long time now. Frankly it hasn’t seemed to be working. The only logical solution is to abolish the death penalty as there is no viable way to eliminate the shortcomings of our legal system.
Though life without the possibility of parole may save some inmates in the end the numbers of inmates that are innocent outweigh the dead. In a study conducted by Michael Summers he states “each execution carried out is associated with the saving of dozens of innocent lives” (Summers 10) There are no known humane punishments to replace the death penalty, but the best we can do with our current knowledge is to stop the executions completely. The alternative punishment is life-long prison punishments without the appeal to parole which is quite cumbersome on our society as inmates of this level give negative value to our
