The Play 'Adding Machine' By Elmer Rice
The play “Adding Machine” by Elmer Rice can be used to illustrate the effects of Braverman due to the fact it is about a Mr. Zero who has been working in the business for about 25 years and was going to be replaced by an adding machine (Rice, 1945, p. 475-476). This can be related to the division of labour because capitalist need individuals that meet their needs and if they don’t need an individual they can easily replace workers with machines (Pagano, 1991, p. 324). The adding machine is significant due to the fact it’s a mechanical device that adds automatically which can save a lot of time and can be operated by a high school person (Rice, 1945, p. 476). An example that was mentioned in lecture was that factories buy labour power because it values the workers ability to work and what it consumes. The Corporation film was about if corporations had too much power or not. We can compare corporations to football because in football offense has their job to do and defense has their task to do, both positions have a purpose. The purpose of corporation is to be successful and to earn profit. It was mentioned in the film that some companies provides good and services for the environment which can be beneficial. The Corporation film showed externalities example such as: sweatshops, factory fires, unions busting and layoffs. These externalities can have a major impact on individuals because without work there are unable to provide for their family. Capitalist are expanding in today’s society because they are able to get work done faster, more efficiently and effectively by using machines it creates no jobs for individuals specialized in that particular task. The film and the play are somewhat similar due to the fact it is about a business or corporation which is dealing with technology or machines that can replace workers and give more power to the capitalist. Layoffs are becoming more widespread and competitions are more aggressive than ever before. It was shocking that in the film “The Corporation” to see that workers in sweatshops were creating t-shirts for 3 cent and the price sold of the shirt was $14.99.
