The Perfect Storm Literary Techniques
Many natural disasters happen on a daily occurrence such as the hurricane that killed 2,500 people or the tsunami that took the lives of 280,000. In both “Super Disasters” by Jacqueline Adams and The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger the authors wrote about natural disasters however they do this in very different ways, like in how they vary their writing techniques. For example, “Super Disasters” is more of an informational article whereas The Perfect Storm starts off as a personal anecdote. So as you can see both authors in these stories use many different types of techniques and strategies such as vocabulary, data, and text structure. They use these to describe the causes and effects of some of the most outrageous natural disasters. The …show more content…
Like how in the starting paragraphs of The Perfect Storm the author uses a personal anecdote “You see so much bad weather that you kind of get used to it. But then you see really bad weather. And”. This is a personal story because you can see that the author uses words like “you”and he also provides the way he feels which is not found iis not always found in descriptive writing.. In contradistinction to this Adams can be found using lots of description in her article “hurricane katrina’s mighty winds tore up some towns to shreds, and drowned others in floodwaters.” This shows lots of description by creating imagery of what damage hurricane katrina did .Comparatively they both use cause and effect to describe the natural disasters. Like how Adams writes “The aftershock not only interfered with rescue efforts, they also triggered landslides that blocked rivers”. Cause and effect is shown, because it shows that for the landslides to have to occured there must have been an aftershock. Junger also uses cause and effect on page 162 of The Perfect Storm “ Too fast and we’d start surfing, too slow and the waves would just blast right over the boat.”. In his book, The Perfect Storm, Sebastian Junger tries to write both as a journalist and as the narrator of separate stories about a sword fishing boat, a three person sailboat, and U.S. Coast Guard Cutter stuck in the middle of colliding weather systems.     When analyzing the horror of Katrina within Ward’s novel Salvage the Bones and the actual catastrophe that was broadcasted throughout the media, readers are able understand its true impact. It seems as though Ward brought to light the realness and severity of Katrina rather than just restate the obvious. Ward’s writing is a perfect storytelling of the event— filled with some of her very own personal experiences. For example, the scene in which the character Esch narrates her perspective of the town as she walks the streets with Big Henry and Junior vividly brews out the damage that Katrina had caused. Not only are readers able to comprehend the destruction Katrina caused, but we are able to focus on a particular family. I think that knowing the story of the Batiste family really grabs at the reader’s attention and allows them to understand something other than the political aspect. Ward’s novel Salvage the Bones captures the emotional impact caused by Katrina and highlights a family in need of union. Simultaneously, Esch’s perspective allowed me to really visualize the power of hurricane Katrina. Never experiencing the horror of such natural disaster, Esch’s colorful description of Katrina and the aftermath had me terrified.…

    Junger expresses his theme of this in his book, The Perfect Storm, by using different literary features to show his message. In the case of this story, sadly the crew of the Andrea Gail, a fishing boat, had all perished at sea. Since Junger wanted to write a true and factual story explaining what happened on that ship, he used interviews, reports, and anecdotes. Accordingly, he went to other people who had lived through almost the same experience of what happened on the Andrea Gail and collected intell from them. He uses an anecdote about a man who was dragged through sea while having a hook stuck in his hand. The purpose for using an anecdote like that is so it helps the reader get a better sense of the intensity out at sea. He uses another anecdote about a captain and two crew members on a yacht called the Satori. By writing about this story about this crew having to jump straight into the ocean and need to be saved by the Coast Guard rescuers in result of the weather out at sea, Junger is expanding the knowledge of the reader on conditions out at sea, helping him convey his theme.
