This is the catastrophe. Kino says, “Oh, my brother, an insult has been put on me that is deeper than my life. For on the beach my canoe is broken, my house burned, and in the brush a dead man lies.” His life is turned upside-down and he feels the impact through these terrible incidents. They can be called examples of catastrophe because these events would not have happened if the pearl hadn’t made him the target of these attacks. Additionally, it states “And in the surface of the pearl he saw Coyotito lying in the cave with the top of his head shot away.” After his son is murdered, Kino looks at the pearl and sees this image. The pearl that Kino finds appears beautiful on the outside, but it is really a thing of pure evil despite the deception of beauty. Kino stumbles across the large, beautiful egg-shaped pearl, clueless to how it will end up destroying everything he loves. This shows that when Kino finding the pearl could represent someone accepting a temptation. Each decision he makes brings on either a positive or a negative reward of some sort. Kino stumbling across the pearl is not a bad event; it is what he chooses to do after he finds the beautiful pearl that brings upon the negative outcomes. This is all because of Kino’s negative decisions that he chooses to make. The roots of all his issues begin at the pearl. After Kino finds the pearl, everyone he knows becomes overly interested in the valuable object. The pearl causes not only Kino to make bad decisions, but it also causes the people around him to begin to make these choices as well. “All manner of people grew interested in Kino – people with things to sell and people with favors to ask. Kino had found the Pearl of the World” (Steinbeck 36). Kino doesn’t know about the pearl’s ability to tear his life apart when he finds it, let alone all of the ways the pearl manipulates others in negative ways towards him. This is important because this pearl will begin to take over some of the characters’ lives in a very negative way. The pearl creates…

Before the pearl entered Kino’s life, he had once heard the song of evil, “In his mind a new song had come, the Song of Evil, the music of the enemy, of any foe of the family, a savage, secret, dangerous melody, and underneath, the Song of the Family cried plaintively.” (3) but once the pearl entered his life, it was not uncommon that he heard the song of evil very frequently. This reveals that the pearl brings evil into Kino’s mind and it interfered with the peaceful life he had before. Before the pearl, Kino was satisfied with what he had but ever since he acquired the epearl, he has always thought of wanting more. “A vision thing in the air North of the city-the vision of a mountain was two hundred miles away.” (21) This reveals that one thought to be “fortune” changed Kino’s mind into always wanting more instead of being satisfied. The fortune brings one's mind to think about what they want money wise instead of what they have family wise. The more damage the pearl does to the family, the less Kino hears the beautiful song of the pearl when he looks at the pearl and the more he hears the battle cry song of the family. “In Kino’s ears the song of the family was as fierce as a cry. He was immune and terrible and his song has become a battle cry.” (47) As a result of Kino seeing the true colors of the pearl and what it can do to an innocent man’s mind, the song of in his head has changed from good to…

First off, Kino’s greed engulfed his entire life and lead to stopping at no ends to attain more money. Due to extreme desire for wealth, Kino let the Pearl take him over, thus he even says, "This Pearl has become my soul', said Kino. ‘If I give it up, I shall lose my soul…" (Steinbeck 67”. Not only does Kino blatantly say it, but he also shows it several times throughout the story. For example, when he was attacked on the beach, not only did he retaliate, but he killed the man as well. This is due to the fact that the pearl has become his soul, and because he wants the money so bad, his soul was infected with the deadly poison of greed, and he killed a man. Furthermore, had Kino have been content with the original offer of 1500 pesos, he would not have begun such a great and treacherous endeavor to the Capitol. Kino’s situation is similar to the story of the man who was greedy for land. One day, this man was granted a boot to have as…
