“The Outsiders”
S.E Hinton

S.E Hinton published her book, “The Outsiders” on April 24, 1967. Sixteen years later in 1983, The Outsiders was then produced and was showed in theaters.

SETTING The author never mentioned exactly where this all took place;
In 1965 in an unnamed city, in an unnamed state, the East Side/West Side which is two “zones” divided by economics; East Siders don’t have enough money and West Siders have plenty. An abandoned church on top of a hill, the country, and the city.

CHARACTERS
“GREASERS”
Ponyboy Curtis- 14 years old; the narrator of the story. Gets good grades in school, youngest Curtis brother.
Sodapop Curtis- 16 years old; works at a Gas station. High school dropout, middle Curtis brother.

The Greasers walk Marcia and Cherry home when Socs; Bob Sheldon & Randy Adderson see them and think that they are trying to steal their girlfriends. To prevent a fight, the girls left Bob and Randy willing. That night, Ponyboy came home really late and his brother Darry got angry and hit him. Ponyboy got upset, left and met up with Johnny. While walking around the neighborhood, Johnny and Ponyboy were approached by Bob, Randy, and three other drunk Socs. They all start fighting, and Bob almost drowns Ponyboy in a nearby fountain. Johnny got scared and stabbed Bob; accidently killing him. Ponyboy and Johnny run and find Dally who gives them a loaded gun and money and tells them to go hide in an abounded church on top of a hill. Ponyboy reads "Gone with the Wind" to Johnny and then recites the poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost. After a couple of days at the church, Dally comes to get them, and tells them that the Socs and the Greasers have been fighting a lot more since Bob’s death. Johnny decides to turn himself into the police, but Ponyboy noticed that the church caught on fire with children trapped inside. Johnny and Ponyboy rushed inside to try and rescue them until a burning timber fell onto Johnny breaking his back, Dally rescued Johnny and Ponyboy was left unharmed and spent only a short time

The Outsiders is a novel written by S.E Hinton in the 1960’s, the novel is based on a true story. The story is about Ponyboy, a teenager that belongs in the gang called Greasers. There is another gang that opposes the Greasers called the Socs. The two gangs live in two sides of Oklahoma, the Greasers being in the east, and the Socs being in the west. The Socs and the Greasers often fight each other. To society, the Greasers are low class and cause trouble, while the Socs are rich and can do no harm. Ponyboy dramatically changes throughout the novel, he starts to wonder if he should model himself to the members of his gang or follow his own path.     At twenty, Darry is the oldest in the gang and the oldest of the Curtis brothers. Darry is extremely intelligent and very athletic. Additionally , he does all the cooking and housework. He is very strong, principled and grumpy. Pony tells us that before their parents died, Darry “had been real popular in high school; he was captain of the football team and he had been voted Boy of the Year”. Darry could have been a Soc any day. Darry had sacrificed going to college and working to make sure the family sticks together. Darry is very strict towards Ponyboy as he knows that Ponyboy can have a better opportunity then he did but Pony does not like it. Sodapop and Ponyboy think Darry works to hard. Darry is very physically fit, the gang calls him “Superman” and “Muscles”. When the Curtis parents died, Darry took on the responsibility of raising his two teenage brothers. Ponyboy always reminds us in the novel that Darry works full time. Darry is the parent in this novel.…
