The Oppression Of Fate In Antonio Fuentes By Veronica Baker
Antonio Fuentes met Veronica Baker in a way that borders on sounding like a romantic comedy: a tale of spilled coffee and an apologetic lawyer, an overwhelmed grad student accepting her fate- that today would in fact, be one of the not-so-great ones. Antonio took this event, like so many others in his life, as a challenge. Admittedly, making amends with the girl he’d just scalded seemed like a nearly impossible task, but Antonio managed damage control with charm and grace. Rosa often thinks of her parents meeting as a reminder of fate, something to hang on to when she’s not sure she’s doing the right thing.

The pressure of keeping a good public image has always been a driving force in Rosa’s life, though mostly due to her mother’s influence.

In Dìaz’s story we can see the relationship among a foreigner family, while in Andre Dubus’s story we see an American average family. In both stories, fathers play an important role; they figure prominently and have a considerable impact on their family but on the story also. The father in Dubus’s story is more family oriented that the one in Dìaz’; moreover the family is more closely–knit in Dubus’s story than in Dìaz’s story.     Firstly, the writer quickly introduces the two main characters from the beginning of the first paragraph so the writer could quickly portrays her family’s background and her theme to make us feel pity for Veronica as the writer mentioned “We had grown up together in my native village”. This sentence is a minor sentence of the narrator but because of the title of this story is named “Veronica”, the reader first’s impression might be that this is a girl name. Now the reader knows that there’s a female character but we do not know about the gender of the narrator yet as Veronica has not mention the narrator’s name.
